I did do this as well - no luck.

We recently had a similar case.  Strong signals from a PI and VLF and when we dug and found nothing we tracked the signal with an MD-20.   It was coming from along  a horizontal crevice in a dry streambed, the perfect place to trap nuggets.  Prying open the crevice we still found nothing that we could pinpoint.  We filled a bucket with the material that we'd removed and panned it.  What we found were some tiny little globules, clearly visible only with a hand lens.   Our theory is that we detected a  collection of tiny mercury balls that were close enough together to set off detectors, but dissipated and spread out when we dug, sort of like iron oxide. 

Not sure if we're correct with our mercury theory but it is one possible explanation, at least in this particular case.
