  1. Deepest coins I dug were where dirt was moved and not from natural sinking from worm activity etc. I dug a reale at 12", couple silver dimes at more than 12". Majority of large cents here are in the 10" mark or less. Big problem running large coils here is we have a lot of old iron bits and magnetite so bigger the coil the more it gets smothered. I'm sure other parts of the country the case is different.
  2. Tx guage wire also effects depth, it isn't always just about voltage. I still don't know why companies push such big coils, other than for clean plowed fields or sanded beaches large coils aren't all that necessary and can be very counter productive. More prone to EMI, heavier to swing, harder to separate around high trash areas..... Majority of finds are well under the 10" mark and in parks expecially with so many people detecting now most the finds are near the surface and are fresh drops.
  3. I'm thinking of portability. Beach hunting I'm going back to my pi.
  4. I only found 1 class ring and after exhausting tracking down I ended up tossing a letter in the mail to last known address as the person had hop scotched across the country. He had lost his 55 years before. Well worth returning those.
  5. Been considering the Legend but I 11" coil is a bit big for my hunting and 6" is too small. Any updates on the 5x9 1/2?
  6. Is it better at elevating targets out of the ground like the Vanquish ads had?
  7. I actually don't like the wireless option on pinpointers as they disable the coil when on. I may turn off the connect to mine for my Multi Kruzer. Mostly use my standard Carrot.
  8. Welcome to the forum. Lot of Whites users here that should give you some good pointers.
  9. Smaller coils seem more stable and are less emi sensitive. Probably why they are so effective in urban areas. Depth wise they are still in striking range of majority of targets.
  10. There should be some straight versions, send a message to Rich on them. I did make a few. I don't think he got a chance to update the ordering options. https://www.ebay.com/itm/314076481857?hash=item49206ac941:g:H3MAAOSw1zxi1LiJ&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAAoPrqfkGJ4C4aSCINWHKtgl%2BVIAOVrPpDNUE87%2Fe7j0ogvBIThgjnJLIgeagtcD45NmSbNhQ3vOqX2%2F497VptzW01Pdo%2Fhp9lXz2ljvFST1fLJJQSzZpcKUfNdP1ox6J7qUu008We%2F3KnwJvpO8YBZHqjEYnZTt%2FC65JKl60XTI8KPwrHNh2aFA99qshA29ODN7lC6ktxpWAAxMDDRgt%2Fxrw%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR7yy_rbYYA I am not a big fan of Ebay myself but Rich also sells from his site at https://backwoodsmetaldetectors.com/ I am considering making a site but direct sales is tough for me as I usually get busy gets crazy for me to try to keep up fulfilling orders. Next batch is in the works but waiting for some curly maple to come in. Thanks
  11. It doesn't twist, it is actually oblong not perfectly round and not slippery as you would think. I had similar concerns at first until I had it in hand.
  12. That Cibola had a gb mod but it was unstable and knock sensitive. Original trim pot was removed so I found a small 50k and was able to solder one back in, removed the mod and restored machine back to the way it was. For the most part the Cibola is a beep and dig, not much for nuances on it but with the small coil is a blast to use in trashy parks and shallow targets. Perfect for around here with limited digging due to the dry conditions like my toasty lawn 😞
  13. Hot weather kept me in most the summer so I got bored. Wasn't happy with the frankenshaft I had put together for my Cibola so I snagged the all carbon S-Shaft from Steve G. Carbon shaft alone is only 8.6oz!! You can see the taper on it that I needed to make an adapter plate; Plate I may redo and refine it later and make it bit lighter as I over built it as usual. Next I made the cuff: Finally because I ordered the shaft with the back too long I had to trim a couple inches off. Final pics of complete machine: Total weight including the 10.5 oz Shrew is 2.1lbs. If I remake the adapter I can get it to the 2lb mark. The adapter plate and cuff use pocketed screws and bolts and internally there is a recess for industrial adhesive tape. I did not want to glue or put screws through the carbon in case I needed to remove a part so nothing is permenant.
  14. Went back for a bit with buddy. Turns out it was the city burn pit which explains the ash. Lots of steel heals because they burned wooden shoes so those are a bit of a pain to work around. Brought my hand digger and worked an area that the ground wasn't too dry and snuck out this 1920 walker half about 10" down. I knew there is some good targets still there.
  15. What I don't like about salt modes on machines is there is a point between the dry and wet sand where ground balance is in between, too high for salt and too low for dry sand. Machines with manual ground balance are easier for me to fine tune that in between. I use Gen mode in those areas so I can tell what the ground is doing. Of course your a bit further away from the salt πŸ™‚
  16. Beach mode has a different gb range and because small gold is so close to the salt range it won't pick up. If it did your machine would be unstable and chatty in the salt. On the MK and Anfibio have a beach mode which gb range offset and optimized for salt. It is a 2 tone mode and default settings don't work well around here. I kicked the gain to 89, turned off the default disc range that trimmed out to 14 and may run it only to 4 tops with iron audio on low. I also kicked up the isat and tend to run that upwards of 6 which really quiets the machine down. Beach hunting I do I mostly use either gen, 2 tone or 3 tone and manually ground balance. I have been able to get descent depth even with 19khz. Fresh water wouldn't you use park 1?
  17. Went over the section tonight that I hit yesterday with the MK but this time with the Tejon. Kicked up the primary disc to just below nickel break, 2nd disc above tab mark. Dropped sensitivity to 8 but later on dropped to 6 which kicked out the big pieces of coal but still kept the coppers and silver range so machine ran really quiet. The high 90's targets I heard on the MK turned out to be boot heal plates and for some reason the ground is littered with them all just around 6" down. Got one good tone that I skipped with the other machine that turned out to be a crotal bell and still has the dingaling inside πŸ™‚ This one is the only one I have found that has its guts still but it isn't fancy so maybe from a work wagon of some sorts? Good news there are quite a few deep good targets in the grounds all deeper than my probe so will wait till we get some rain and can use the regular digger. The bell is a good sign for late 1800's coins so grounds might be old enough for some large cents etc.
  18. The park was formed in that period of time so that makes sense. Trick is finding what else is there under all the junk they buried below. The smaller coil on the MK is probably one of the best combinations on a machine I have used and has incredible separation and speed. Though the 5x9 1/2 isn't as deep as the other coils, I wasn't doing deep searched especially with how dry the ground is. In general though that coil will hit the majority of finds out there. It is also incredibly emi resistant. If Nokta ever releases that size coil for the Legend and it performs similarly people will do really well with it especially for jewelry. Now for the ground I was hunting the Tejon may do much better or at least be easier to sniff out targets as I won't be bombed with targets I'm not looking for. Concentric coil on that is really good around hot rocks and dropping sensitivity will lose the tiny bits of crap that give ya a migrane. Concentric coils in general seem to handle that type of ground better.
  19. Was out for less than an hour, 1 silver isn’t that bad lol
  20. Multi Kruzer with 5 x 9 1/2 dd, 3 tone mode, iSat 1, Gain 89, 14khz. Ground is incredibly noisy from all the coke below, coin was maybe 6" down just in the coke. Next time out I'll take the Tejon with 8x9 concentric so I can not get blasted with all the target spikes the coke does. Number on the MK would spike from foil to mid 90's. Ground is horrible. Ground phase was in the 30-mid 40's in many of the dumping grounds. Rich black dirt near the tree lines and on slopes where coke wasn't dumped the ground phase was in 60-70's. Usually higher when the ground is wet but its bone dry here. Last tiny detail I swung the coil from left to right then back..... not sure if it made any difference πŸ˜‰
  21. Haven't done any detecting in a while because of the heat. Finally got a break and hit an old park. Very noisy hunting because a few inches down is all coke and coal that they used to fill the park and tossed loam over it. Was able to pick this merc out of the mess. Will use another machine next time over and see if I can find others. Of course I'll shamelessly show off my digger πŸ™‚ Been using that pretty much exclusively because grounds are so dry here.
  22. I returned a class ring before. You can look up the classmates of that year and school and find out whos it was by the initials inside. Class rings are 10k, scrap value less than $600 but worth way more to the person that lost it if they are still alive. Good way of building karma :)
