  1. Finally, a place to post my wheat pennies. 🙂
  2. What does Montana (not Montana) mean? I've dug a few Minie Balls here in NH. I don't know much about them though. Sorry I can't help you there.
  3. A piece of iron that big would surely be a high tone. It certainly has the classic look of a train from the period.
  4. There's not much Alexandre can do besides try to sell the idea to detector companies. My gut feeling is that FT is done with the AQ. Innovation doesn't seem to be their thing. We haven't seen anything new from FT since they got into selling detectors except for a re-packaging of what already existed.
  5. That's very generous of you to share the locations. Is that because you have no competition or you just don't plan on ever going back? I've never been beyond the east coast but deserts have always fascinated me. I would love to hunt those places. I've watched so many westerns, I can imagine hundreds of scenarios of how people might lose stuff in the desert.
  6. It's way more difficult to find stuff now than it was twenty years ago as every year more and places get hunted out. We used to just drive around looking for places to detect. Virgin sites were everywhere. Now you have to think outside of the box. I do tons of map research and still get skunked more often than not.
  7. So the heartbreaker was that ring wasn't valuable? They can't all be gold.
  8. Nice old relics. The brass fork thing looks like the inner part to a shoe buckle.
  9. Not only that but much of the general public equated the actors to be a couple of idiot morons. When asking for permission to detect a property, this was the impression landowners had of us. It made the hobby look bad. Many detectorists including myself sent emails to NGS demanding that the show be removed. It was a very heavy topic on the forums. In contrast "detectorists" was very well done. Andy and Lance are likable guys. They portrayed the hobby in a good way. I loved that show.
  10. Interesting spot. Beautiful coins. It's been a while since I've found a Barber Quarter. I have to side with NGC canceling Diggers. Glad they did it. They should have canceled it before it aired.
  11. I went to the Meadowbrook a few times. I remember a really good Led Zeppelin cover band one of the times I was there. The motel/lounge was torn down a long time ago and replaced with a big car dealership. I know Mike from NH Beach Metal Detecting pretty well. I've been in some of his videos. He lived not far from me before he moved to Hampton. What I don't like about his channel is that he gives away the location of all the hot spots. Next day a dozen or more people show up. I wish he would stop doing that. I'm hoping he spends more time at Hampton Beach now that he lives there. You can also find him on the NH Metal Detecting Forum. He goes by the name saltwaterking. You must mean the Seacoast Coin and Jewelry detector shop in Hampton. I drive by it all the time but have never been inside. There's also a Cabela's in Scarborough that might have a lot of detecting stuff. I've never been there either. I do all my shopping online.
  12. I had to look that up. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klaatu_barada_nikto
  13. The Basin in Phippsburg was one of my favorite anchorages. I explored and detected that area for years. Sold my last sailboat in 2009 and took up surfing in 2013. Just started wing foiling last fall. I still detect when I can. Finding stuff is a lot more of a challenge now than it was 20 years ago.
  14. I'm closer to Maine than Hampton. I grew up on the Piscataqua looking over to Eliot. In '69 my parents moved to the other side of town near Great Bay. That's where I live today. I'm 65 now. Parents have been gone many years. I know Kittery well.
  15. You're way up there? Most people would call that mid coast, not south coast. South coast usually means south of Portland. Mid coast is Portland to Bar Harbor. Downeast is Bar Harbor to Lubec. I've spent a lot of time cruising along all three of Maines coasts.
  16. Kinda hard to follow the story but sounds like you got a Half Dime. Good work. No pics?
  17. It think it's more likely a tag not a token. Could have gone to any number of things.
  18. That doesn't surprise me a bit. It's sad that people enjoy that crap and that people got paid to do it.
  19. Slow computer George? Have patience. Give it time to process.
  20. I had never heard of Large Cents until I got into metal detecting. I call them Large Cents because that's what the Red Book calls them and call them cents because it says Cent right on the coin. Canadian coppers are called pennies. Most Colonial coppers are Half Pennies. Modern cents are often called pennies here in New England, but that's more of a nickname. Calling a Large Cent a Big Penny just sounds funny.
  21. Do you clean the oil off with a solvent or leave them oily?
  22. I've never tried motor oil. I would think it would turn them black, especially used motor oil. Twenty years ago, everyone used olive oil which I finally concluded doesn't work at all and just leaves them dirty and stinky. These days, I just scrub them under the faucet with stainless steel wool and some soap and I'm happy with that. Out of hundreds of Large Cents found I've only dug two in good condition. They had almost zero corrosion with just a light surface coating of green oxidation. I put them through electrolysis which made them look shiny new. After a few years or so, they toned to a beautiful caramel brown. When they reached the tone I was happy with, I coated them with Ren Wax.
  23. They are not uncommon on our beaches. I've found a few and I know others who have found them. Usually the address is the crematorium and the number records what was cremated. It's the contents of the container that were important, not the tag. It's a cool find. I'd keep it. It would rust away after a year or two in the salt water anyway.
