  1. XP still makes analog machines but no one seems to carry them. I had looked into it before. http://www.xpmetaldetectors.com/metal-detector/g-maxx-ii/
  2. You came to the right place. Welcome!
  3. Welcome to the crowd. If your not in a rush there are some new machines rolling out and the trend is lower cost/high performing so watch what people are saying.
  4. Welcome to the forums. Lot's of good suggestions from the members here on what machine will serve you best, just hollar what type of detecting you want to do, ie prospecting, coin/relic, jewelry...
  5. Well said GB! My little bit, I know what a good target sounds like on couple of my machines with a great deal of accuracy and still learning my MK. With that being said and knowing how a good target sounds I avoid the other targets. One of the reasons I don't notch disc anything out other than the lowest denominator being iron and in some cases foil and small aluminum. I have a great confidence that I haven't missed any gold rings in doing so when I still pick up earings. This just tells me that there are most likely no gold rings. VDI #'s are nice but my first choice for indicator is the audio regardless what the vdi shows. The strength of a signal and how far you can hear it with coil lifted, duration of the signal and how long or short it carries and the roll of the target are the real indications I go by. It really doesn't matter to me what machine I use with my PI as an exception as the audio on that is pretty consistent with incredibly subtle differences. Trash has so many variables over good targets I find it easier to just ignore them. The only times it gets tricky is with iron masking so I listen for breaks on some machines or keep my iron audio low and hit those spots at a couple of angles to see if a target is being dragged down. Iron will bring a good target or even smother it in one direction but you may get a chirp or much higher # in another direction and of course if you somehow see a spike at near max of the VDI range then it's just big iron.
  6. Picking stuff out from rocks, gravel and roots is always risky. Can't use shovels or spades there either. Happens to everyone. Look at it on the brighter side... all the other ones out there are worth that much more 🙂
  7. Many places here you can't use a spade. I was at a school yard other day and a maintenance guy drove up and blew his horn. Yelled that I left big holes all over. I pointed to my digger and showed him what I dug and the tiny spots I put flaps and plugs back with no lumps no damage. He let me keep detecting. If I brought my foot digger I would have been banned from the area. The right tool for the area is important. Shovels and foot spades are great in big fields or woods that don't have too many roots but I find myself using a hand digger most of the time. I take my time pinpointing the target well before I even stoop over to dig. Sweep in one direction then at a 45 sweep again. Sometimes if you bug dance around too much you will miss and start picking up other targets. My sweeps are just wide enough to cover the target. Helps with figuring size too. That is a cool find, congrats!
  8. Probably didn't renew their hosting services.
  9. Very good detailed explanation on the Outlaw. Just looking at it I never realized how much more behind the operation of it there was. Thanks for sharing.
  10. I run mine similar but use 2nd disc for quick range check to id stuff in the alum/nickel and gold and everything else. So.. first disc set at line below nickel which will pick up on beavertails but cut majority of foil out. Nickels have a robust sound but have a roll to them. Gold rings have more roll to the audio and aluminum square tabs and larger can slaw have a flat sound. Tiny signals that carry longer are most likely aluminum. 2nd disc I set to tab which scrubs on the ring tabs. Folded ring tabs may sound off and are worth digging as they come in the same as flying eagle cents. Badly degraded zinc pennies will break. Copper pennies come in loud and clean and silver will have a softer roll. Alternatively hunting in areas with high iron I set the first disc at iron but not to lose the iron. Any silver in the area that may be masked normally will sound in loud and clear. You may get a broken signal in one direction but clean on another is a good indicator of iron masking an object. 2nd disc I will set to break on any additional trash such as can slaw. This setup worked well for me in older areas that have deeper targets. All metal mode may be louder or softer depending on the object your detecting when comparing to the disc modes. In other words you may get a little pop on an object in disc and a longer tone in AM. Ground conditions and GB can effect that as well as for instance a larger or longer piece of aluminum you may normally have it trimmed out but not fully so the pop can be the thicker part of the object picking up. I use AM to check not only for pin pointing but determining the objects size and depth. Disc modes just keep things quiet until I get a hit worthy of investigating. A buried can you probably already know carries the sound much further so lifting the coil off will help too. Lifting coil on small low conductor hits does the same as can slaw will carry the signal more than a small piece of gold. IE a bracelet will have a very short range when compared to a foil wrapper. Both Disc should be spot on with the object. Easy way is to set them to break on one then check to the other.
  11. Grab a blisstool, has enough knobs and switches to keep you busy for quite a while. Good analog machines have a learning curve when it comes to audio only. Your approach to an area is treated a bit different as you discriminate from bottom up and don't have numbers or notching to fall back on. Forces you to really listen to your targets. I find it more gratifying calling out a target to myself before I dig and having it be that target based off just sound.
  12. Happens with my stock 8x9 concentric too. This is a fairly recent problem and wondering if something drifted out of calibration or maybe my ground balance pot is going. I had problems with the pot not long ago.
  13. Recently my Tejon seems to be extra sensitive to EMI and I get a waiver or flutter in the threshold. Is there a way to tune or fix that? Not sure if something is failing or if it is just out of tune. Thanks
  14. Part of a field that is usually swampy has dried out a bit and I was able to see what was there without sinking to my knees. Found Susan B Dollar (most hated coin I think), British One Penny which was an odd find this side of the pond and a small white gold earing 12-14k .044g. Oddly the One Penny is worth the most 🙂 Rest is the usual clad.
  15. I have used the Max a bit and packed many hours into my Pro. The Pro is slightly better on small jewelry. I can see that just about any mid range and now even the under $400 machines can pick up turf gold. Rings tend to be shallow in parks and if you don't mind working through the can slaw or digging the slaw you will just increase your odds of finding gold.. Higher frequency machines just give you more spread on the #'s in the low and mid range conductors. I think Garrett made a good choice on frequency for the Max as it hits silver better than the other 2 machines in the model line. I do find the AT Pro and Max tricky to work through heavy iron riddled areas and if your not careful it is easy to set the iron disc too high and mask out objects.
  16. The XXXX steel wool works just slow. Thinking if that worked then good old scotch bright pads would work.
  17. Ahh so your a postal delivery/chew toy worker. All makes sense now :)
  18. Going to try that, I have some super fine xxxx steel wool I use on pewter. Thanks!
  19. 70 yr old ring I would think would be tough to track the owner. They could also have been from outside the area and were visiting when it dropped. Only had one incident here where someone let their rottie loose so I just ignored the dog and it finally backed off. Other than that dogs tend to come over and see what I'm doing. I would rather have dogs running around than people. Never show fear around aggressive animals and don't challenge them.
  20. Ran the RnB that wasn't at full charge as I had it on my ATP since last winter. Battery ran strong at full power for bit longer than 20 hours. Downside is it doesn't report back the life to the battery indicator but no biggie as I still have the internal. May give the AA rechargeable BlackUbe's a go and see how long they run. In either case they should save wear and tear on the internal battery.
  21. Welcome to the forums, should be some good hunting in RI and many of my friends hit CT a lot.
