  1. Did you try just changing frequencies or frequency shift to eliminate emi? I do that on my Multi Kruzer when near transformers.
  2. What is that tape on the outer edges on the coil? Is that for shielding?
  3. Does the black sand mode cut out chatter from the iron in the soil?
  4. Tiffany would be 14k and 925. The blue one might be a modern sapphire . Other looks like amethyst, rubies are usually super red. I'm lucky if I find half dozen rings in a year of any quality. You found all those in a couple of hours! Hate to say it but you should be slothing through that field in Gen Mode 19kzh and pick up the ear rings, bracelets and pendents lost. Place is probably loaded. Grass will be happy when you pull all that aluminum out hehe
  5. With the stock coil and have iron audio on, simply hit the edge of the target and if you get a grunt and the target is a high number like a really loud dime then it's a cap. DD coils in general will put flat iron objects like bottle caps, washers, oxen shoes etc way above the normal iron range where iron nails would be. If you are hunting in areas with lots of bottle caps like a park and want to do simple coin shooting then look into the small concentric coil and you can trim them out. To quiet the machine down, nudge up the iron discrimination up as an example if your near some old buildings or fields where there are a lot of old square nails the iron discrim should be up around the low 30's. I set mine so the iron just makes a crackle sound. I keep iron audio off unless i want to do a quick iron check. You can set all this in your custom mode. The coin mode has basic discrimination pattern but you risk losing gold rings with that setting as gold and aluminum are mixed in that range. The marks on the display for iron, foil etc are just approximate. The Max has a lot of power so your sensitivity might be plenty strong 2 clicks from max (default). The most important thing you should do is keep your coil flat to the ground and just above it with consistent swing speed. I do 1 sec each way for the most part. Having a consistent swing speed will make it easier to hear the size of an object and will give you consistent VDI #'s on the display.
  6. Well done. The gold and silver ring might be spot plated or could be just gold and silver. You can tell if you take a loupe to it and look along the edges. Spot plated will have signs of wear and edges won't be crisp like 2 metals. 2 metal castings are tricky. they make secondary part and attach to a wax part then go through the usual lost wax for the primary. All gold ring looks like it has amethyst. Did your wife claim them yet? hehe
  7. Turned out I had a bad brand new coil, probably banged up in shipping. Garret replaced it right away and all is good now. Very nice coil but the larger concentric rings in flat iron higher than the smaller concentric will. Depth is slightly more than the stock dd. VDI #'s are solid. Overall good coil to have in your arsenal.
  8. The MX Sport is a lower frequency machine for relic and coin hunting, GMX Sport is the gold machine version and both are the same waterproof design. Would be along the idea of Garrets AT Pro or Max and AT Gold. or the Kruzer and Kruzer gold. Good when companies common parts when possible across the product lines as it gives consistency to the products and reduces product costs.
  9. You should consider a PI. If I was in your neck of the woods and had ground like that it would give me a good reason to snag a TDI. One of the detectors on my someday list but can't justify one here as our soil is easy. The Kruzer Gen mode is a lot of fun and found quite a few dimes that I missed with my Tejon and missed with the kruzer in the other modes. Finding even in heavy trash the the kruzer still works well but obviously more targets the more you have to investigate as you hear everything. I never used an Orx, maybe if it was really waterproof I might have got one. Didn't know the Orx had an All Metal mode. In any case I from the little bit of hunting I did in Gen Mode I found the lower frequencies are working very well with depth. So with that in mind you may do better with your Orx at a low frequency rather than high. You should for kicks give the kruzer a run in gen mode and take your time over the targets before you sell or trade it. Default iSat is 6 i believe but 3 was working well. I try get the iSat low as possible without falsing so it don't lose depth, something I read in the manual some wheres but haven't experienced it first hand. Gain at 99 works ok and not experiencing any vid wraps so far like I do in 2 tone, 4 tone and deep.
  10. Very nice merc, year younger than the one I found the other day. Nice buffalo too. Congrats.
  11. I wonder how a Tejon would work in your area, I find it very good with the 10x12 dd even at the beach where it won't ground balance yet doesn't false out. Only issue I ever had with the Tejon where it was difficult to hunt is where there is really bad emi and I get that annoying flutter but still can hear targets through it. Frequency on it is similar to the Lobo but has manual GB instead which I prefer anyways. The Kruzer in gen mode still locks onto targets which is pretty cool, something the Tejon doesn't do.
  12. The land used to be owned by a Dr. that took care of Civ war soldiers. Then land was taken over by Nuns and the old camp area was used by the BoyScouts for good number of years. The camp area is still used and has a fire pit going back as long as I can remember. It is now a town forest/park. I never disc out nickels. Worst case I will trim at the foil range on the Tejon but MK and AT P I just disc the iron as it they have VDI's to junk check for the most part. I also don't notch either machine.
  13. Dirt like that you might be better off with a PI. I did hit an area that I was picking up some the old large cents and one end of the area has really bad emi that just kills 14 and 19. Even my Tejon I had a steady flutter on the thresh. For kicks I chucked it into 5khz rather then fiddle with the freq offset and then ran it in Gen mode. There is a besides the frequency I discovered couple bucks worth of dimes mixed in with the iron. My settings I dropped iSat to 5 from 6, could go bit lower I think as min seems fairly consistent. Had gain blasted at 99 and just listened for the coin size objects like Sven1 mentioned. The vdi would hit quite a bit with - - and 04's but I would swing the coil in a different direction and if I got a spike to high 60's I would dig it. Just about every time was a coin, some hit near the 12" mark or so most 6 or less but all mixed in iron that 3 tone wouldn't even blip on or barely blip. 4 tone does hit those targets very well but I found it harder to follow. So....... you might like Gen Mode. Don't dig by pitch but by size. Gen mode is fast becoming my favorite mode on this machine.
  14. I still need to try the tone flipping here. I do use 19khz more mainly because my pinpointer hates 14 lol. 14 is better on silver and better for relic. I find the 19 has a nice spread on mid range targets giving you more number spread between nickels and square tabs etc but you also nail bits of foil too hard. Overall there isn't that much of a drastic difference between the 2.
  15. So that's what a V nickel is supposed to look like? Wish the coppers around here held up that good I'd make a mint. Wonder if we can call this V-Day?
  16. Welcome to the forums. I see you snagged an AT Max. I am a long time AT Pro user and Good friend runs a Max. Good machine but if it tends to eat up batteries you can snag a set of rechargeable AA lithiums like BlackUbe which I use on my Tesoro or the RnB battery pack made for the AT series. I have the RnB on my AT Pro and get a good 40 hours on them. Performance wise the BlackUbes will do the same but I think the RnB will give you proper read out on battery level. BlackUbes will run flat out then run out so the battery indicator might not be accurate. RnB are pricier but either option will keep you going strong for much longer.
  17. Was brutally windy today so figured I would hit a patch of woods where I have found other old coins but this time wanted to test out and see how the 3 tone mode in 19khz can handle probably one of the worst trashy spots in the area. There is a fire pit that goes back to the boyscouts and over the years people have burned their trash and littered the place so it has a healthy mix of aluminum, aluminum slag, old iron nails etc. Kept the MK at 85 gain, iSat 5, Disc at 4 (for the rust), and used n2 on Fe Vol. With some med/quick swings I would hit on a target then go over it and let the machine lock in. Still amazes me the separation and recovery speed on this machine in this mode. Targets aren't deep but it is certainly a good way to pick through the top layers of trash and reveal stuff in between. The V nickel was in a root tangle on a path about 6-7" down and small silver chain piece in with some aluminum can slaw. V Nickel is 1884 I believe but in rough shape but nice to know there is stuff still in the area.
  18. The buttons look fairly old. Finding fresh air isn't bad either.
  19. I'm curious how high do you have to nudge up the discrim at full gain to quiet the machine down and how high at 90? Around here the most I have needed to go is 7, usually 3-4 in most areas but our soil is for wimps. 3 tone is the only mode I run disc on. Others I just use the iron audio but in your case that might not be possible.
  20. I really thought I saw a 19khz single frequency Kruzer at one time. You are right. That's kind of a bummer because I really like the number spread on mid/low conductors at 19khz. as it works very well for me picking through can slag. I completely agree 3 tone is poor at 90 gain. I actually don't go past 85 which I consider the brink for 3 tone which is fine as you probably want to use that in trashy parks and doesn't make sense to try to search 14-16" down in a trash heap as everything on top is going to pollute your signals. I find the audio tricky to learn and taking me some time but that is me as I like that old boring monotone from my Tejon. When using 3 tone and that blazing fast recovery if you come across multiple targets and trying to see what is what, toss it in 4 tone mode and go super slow over them. In 4 tone start your isat at 1, gain 85+ ( i have mine at (95), Iron audio at 2 so it is soft and no discrim. You should be able to start to hear the different targets as you pass over. Handy also if you get a broken target signal from high disc settings.
  21. I find my self doing better with the analog only and no vdi. I dig less trash and find better targets. Not sure how well you can apply this to a vdi machine but the way I run my Tejon and for those that aren't familiar with them you have 2 dscrimination circuits you can toggle between. In an unknown area I will start with disc 1 set to just trim out iron rust like nails and rusty halos etc. and if i start hitting can slag or modern trash I will nudge it up past foil and even at the bottom line of nickel. 2nd disc I use as a range check. Usually set it for pull tab which is the bottom of zinc pennies. Poorly degraded zincs will break at that point too. When I hit a target the first thing is located it. This means hitting the target in a couple directions to make sure I am over it. Next I listen for duration of the sound as i pass the coil over. This tells me size. Next I check how loud it is which can tell me a couple of things such as depth or extremely high conductor like a can or screw cap. Lastly with the pin point mode I check how the vco reacts. Does it have a flat tone as I pass over, usually aluminum has a bright flat sound, or does it have a roll to it. To access the disc 1 you just run the machine, disc 2 by pushing the trigger forward and pinpoint vco you pull the trigger. Now why do I do better with this? Really simple. I don't have numbers telling me what the target might be so I have to rely on my imagination and experience with the machine to determine whether or on I should dig. I find that when I use my AT Pro or my Kruzer I catch myself doubting the target and too many times passing over. I also find myself tired if it is just beeping too much. The Tejon when set properly is quiet as a mouse and you only hear targets in the range your looking for. This means sometimes making another pass with different settings in if your cherry picking but for the most part it isn't necessary and I only do that in extreme trash conditions. There are a couple of tricks I learned with the Tejon that seem to help on the vdi machines but find the vdi's don't necessarily blend frequencies as well As an example if I have small iron that I disc so it just breaks (broken signal) on an iron nail and put a dime near it, I will actually gain depth on that dime. This is because the signal on the dime is typically weak on the Tejon as it picks up on lower conductors better (louder) and the iron brings the dime down so I hear it louder. It don't believe it makes the dime signal stronger in the sense of depth but more it changes the bias of the machines detection to make it just louder. Last bit on the Tejon I found is you don't always need to blast if full gain all the time as it tends to flatten the audio especially on shallow targets in the case of coin shooting in a park. Depth loss when dropping sensitivity is not that much maybe an inch or so between 50% and overload (quarter turn past 10). I usually start at 10 and if I am blasting too much trash and can't hear the difference I will drop the gain back. If I have a fringe target I will just crank it up. Keeping that in mind and using good coil control with consistent level sweeps enables me to be more productive with no #'s. That doesn't go without saying that the numbers do help. But how many times can you catch your self looking at the numbers first when you first get a hit and not the coil and try to locate the target first THEN use the #'s to take some of the mystery out. Try digging some targets without even looking at the #'s just the audio. Just something I think may help.
  22. Very good points made. I was just thinking that as I took my Tejon over an area I had hit pretty well earlier in the week and because I know the Tejon so well I was surprised how many coins I skipped thinking they were trash and how little trash I actually dug with the Tejon. Knowing the machine is so critical and relying on VDI's opens opportunities for other seasoned detectorist. I would rather dig a suspect target than go home thinking What If...
  23. From what I heard the ATX will go deeper but weight is a big issue. There are mods from what I read for the TDI to boost them.
