  1. Beautiful country your from, I went there once with my grandfather when he was doing some work in the Sound of Mull. We stayed in Tobermory, and I got to visit some of the castles there. I really want to go back again for a visit. Welcome to the best forum with the best people for any and all information detector.
  2. Thanks for the video and I watched it and learned a couple of things from it. Right now the ground has been so dry that no matter what I do it still leaves damage. That is why I have only hunted at grandmothers house. I can water and keep an eye on everything while I am here helping her. Today I found an old jar with some type of grease in it with some coins inside. When I can clean them up I will post some pictures. I don't know why there would be coins in inside it, but they were there. The grease is black and almost a tar that is on them, so I have to remove it to be able to tell what they are. The jar was inside where the cabin was near a corner so I hope it has something good inside.
  3. Grandfather was there in the 80's, spent 2 days digging and washing. He found a 1/2 carat which grandmother wears around her neck. It is almost a yellowish color and goes good with the gold necklace.
  4. Great hunting and a couple of good I H coins. Wish you more luck on your next outing. You can always use some of those weights with your fly fishing setup to knock them out when they go after the flies.
  5. Thanks for your kind words, and grandmother is a little upset because of all the holes that I keep making. I can detect further away from the house until we get the grass back and the holes filled better. Some of the people who have been here all their life have told me that there has been 8 or 9 cabins in the area. There was 1 here and another real close by, maybe 100 feet from this one. I am trying to locate another site to try.
  6. I know that once I had gotten down to 8 inches the carrot started going off, so I will have to guess 9-10 inches deep. The hole was about 16 inches wide when I got done digging. I didn't want to beat up what I was trying to find. I want to thank everyone for their opinion on what to do about cleaning it, so I guess I should find a way to preserve it so it won't get worse.
  7. I would like to see if I can get it cleaner if possible, I think it would go great with some of the I H pennies that grandfather had found. The ground is always dry in that area even after a rain.
  8. Great hunting and wish more luck on your next hunt. One of these days I will be able to do that, I hope.
  9. I have been learning my grandfathers equinox 800 metal detector for the past couple of weeks and digging more trash than anything. I was back at it again in his back yard after watering the holes I have dug in the past, almost 300 of them by now, when my grandmother asked me to go back to where an old log cabin used to be. As I turned the corner of area where it used to be near the pine trees, I had a strong signal of 23 and 24. I stopped and rechecked in several directions. I noticed that every direction showed the same numbers and used the pin pointer mode and marked the spot. The 800 was in park 1 at factory settings, and showed that it would be about 5 arrows down. I started to dig in the dry ground removing the top few inches of dirt and grass. I went to the tool shed and picked out a shovel knowing how hard the ground was I needed the added ability to dig. After I got down about 6 inches and no signal on the carrot yet I kept digging. Once I got down 8 inches deep I got a signal on the carrot and began to carefully poke around the ground to remove the dirt where the signal was coming from. I finally saw what was giving me the signal and removed it from it's tomb. Since there was so much dirt still clinging to it I rechecked the hole and nothing else was in it so I filled it in. After cleaning the dirt of with a little bit of Dawn dish soap and water I could make out what was on it. I first thought it said 1 farting, but later was able to read 1 farthing a British coin. The date was 1799 and I am shocked that I was able to find it. Here is what was on grandfathers property, and yes I am going to keep searching the area for more items. I fully expect to dig at least another 15 pounds of trash before I can say I have covered his yard properly. I wish I knew more on how to clean coins and I am reading the forum on just how to do that before I ruin anything. Grandfather never got to clean some of his coins and I really want to get those done for him.
  10. Great find and I agree with Compass about it will be diamonds. They may be small, but they should be real.
  11. Great hunting for such little time. Good luck on your next hunt.
  12. Fantastic find, I am going to have to get to a lake around here to give it a try. I am still trying to learn this 800 and want to get something other than trash. Good luck on your next hunt.
  13. Great hunt and glad to see your hard work pay off. Good luck on your next hunt!
  14. Great find on the shield. She only had 2 hooks from each of the treble hooks in her that would not come out, then they went back to the lake. That was the first time that grandfather had hooked anyone I am told. Once again great find and good luck on your next hunt.
  15. Great hunt, and you even got some bite out of it! Good luck on your next outing.
  16. I really don't have a hero for metal detecting, however this forum is a great mentor for someone like me. I am a newbie in this area, and have been reading a lot about the 800, and trying to learn what to do with it. At times I just want to beat it against the trees, but I know I have to do my best to continue through the learning process. The people here are kind, knowledgeable, and helpful to the max when anyone needs their help. So I guess this forum is not only my mentor, but also my hero. Thank you all for your help.
  17. Grandfather would have said that is not hooked. I found a picture he sent me a couple of years ago that showed how grandmother got hooked on a hobby she liked. They both liked fishing and she really got hooked.
  18. Welcome to the forum, and there is a lot of people here if you have any questions. I am new at this also and have met some very nice and helpful people. Good luck on your hunting.
  19. I really hope that you are right about that as I probably have dug over 250 holes in my grandmothers back yard by now and have only found 4 coins. I have been digging every time I get a solid tone and I can now tell everyone that her back yard looks like a war scene from the movies. I have read a lot of articles on here, but still don't know what I am doing. However if digging everything helps find the good stuff, I should be getting my share soon. I only have about another 1/4 block to go to the back fence and then I will move over about 10 feet more and come back up to the house again. They own half the block where they live as it was a church at one time.
  20. That is a fantastic hunt, I will be lucky to be able to do that with my grandfathers 800. I have only found 3 coins with it so far, but I am cleaning out the trash from his back yard with it. I think it is going to take a miracle to learn that thing, but I am working on it.
  21. Very nice finds and a great gold piece. Good luck on your next hunt.
  22. Good reading the article and I never knew about the gold rush before down there. Thanks for the information.
  23. That is a nice lock now you need to find the key that opens it. Nice hunt and good luck on your next one.
