It's been a while since I last posted and I have been busy with work and the yard. Not that I have not been out a few times, But today was something I had to take the time to share with everyone. I had the day off and wanted to go out early and see what the day would bring me. 5:00 am I decided to get dressed for the day and found a new T shirt that the wife had bought me, It said life is good. It had a dog holding an american flag in its mouth. I thought to myself this might bring me some good luck. Well I think it did. My first three hours were at a spot I hunted a few times. Its loaded with clad and I decided to hunt for quarters and dimes. After a few dollars in clad, I hit a 1945 Washington, (good start) A few more Quarters and I changed spots, Hunting an old horseshoe pit. No luck so I moved a few hundred feet and got a 24-25 on the 800. Out pops a ring that was pretty neat looking but seemed odd and silver plated, But it turned out to be sterling stamped ring made by Unca Co. in the mid 1900's. This morning is turning out pretty good. More clad and I decided to go back to the washington find and go a little slower. With in a minute I got a bouncy on edge tone that produced a very worn Denver mint standing liberty with no date. Sadly I had to go mow the lawn, But being greedy I needed to go back out to another spot. I called my buddy and we went to an old farm house that we hit once a month ago. The last trip yielded a capped bust, large cent, silver broach, pocket watch and an really early buckle. Today I had lower expectations. Well that didn't quite turn out that way. It started out a little slow but ended in a great way. My first good hit was a 1918 merc. Followed by a bunch of wheaties, 9 I think. My buddy hit a large cent and I followed up with a really nice 1914 barber quarter and a KG 3. He ended his day with a nice 1915 barber quarter. LIFE IS GOOD !!!!!!!

Since that awful day last month when the battery on my Nox 800 stopped charging I’ve considered many options, including an external power-pack (expensive), soldering the plug-in cable to other lithium batteries (deadly), and to keep on swapping with the battery from my Nox 600 (pain in ass).. This afternoon I searched on Ebay and scored two new Equinox batteries for just $50 (plus $10 postage).. That’s a new battery for Foxy Noxy and a spare for the unlikely event I ever need another one! Gotta love them win/win days..

I stumbled across this video of the F75 finding a silver coin deeper than the Equinox, and then he goes on to show the F75 performing better finding a coin between iron. What are your thoughts on this one? I never did bother buying a F75 even though a SE edition came up for sale extraordinary cheap nearby to me, my experience with my T2 had me thinking my Nox was better in almost all situations, was I wrong? I'm a bit puzzled by this video and I guess it could be soil conditions or something but I've found my Nox far better on deep silver than my T2 and I sure have experimented a lot on untouched in ground silvers.

Last weekend I made the drive from Anchorage up to the Taylor Highway and past Chicken to the Jack Wade public gold panning area. Look up Steve’s excellent posts on the area for more descriptions and pictures of nuggets, no gold on my trip. It’s still pretty early so Chicken wasn’t even open yet and some ice shelfs were still along sections of the creek. Got great weather, just some passing downpours but in a T-shirt with no mosquitos most of the time. I did take waders to cross the creek,as it was running a little high with snowmelt. This was the first trip I dedicated a lot of time as a serious search for gold and was just as much about learning the detector. Mostly I have worked beaches, campsites, a few roadsides, so I know it can find the tiniest bits of melted aluminum can, bullets and coins. As expected I dug a lot of trash, but I did find some interesting nuggets that are definitely not gold. Most are iron based, magnetic, but a couple look very noduly, and one is not magnetic. The others are probably just rusted bits of iron. There were some sparkles I thought might be pyrite but I think is just dust from the surrounding shist as even the nails and bits of wire sparkle under the right light. Take a look at the pics and see what you think, maybe just welding or torch cutting remnants. They were all in the same area. The area has been heavily worked by detectorists with lots of dig holes around. Equally lots of unexplored tailings but many so overgrown that swinging a detector is impossible. I put in about 16 hours of exploring and detecting on the tailings. Covered a wide variety of terrain and tailings, new, old, tall, short, and along some bedrock sections. On to the Equinox: I tried both Park 2 and the Gold 1 settings. Obviously, my ear is not tuned to the Gold 1 program, it was providing way more chatter than I could process, even with sensitivity turned down to 15 or so. I would have turned it down more but I could run in Park 2 at 20-22 sensitivity and thought I may miss more in Gold 1. I was using the 11” stock coil. Is it normal to have to run at a much lower sensitivity in the gold modes? Most of the time I ended up running in Park 2 with -7,-8,-9 turned off, which may have been a mistake. With how worked the area is, the best chance is probably digging all the iron and hoping for a nugget that might be masked by the trash. In one area I did have some trouble with hot rocks, they would sound as a fairly small but round 12 with iron nearby but after digging out would end up as a -6 hot rock. Was curious why it read so high. All in all a great trip. No gold, and not much wildlife but got a nice shot of a Short-eared Owl on the drive out the Taylor Hwy. Today I was walking along the wet sand just looking for any targets and not finding many. Then I found a Jesus ring. Thank you Jesus! I gridded the area near the ring and found an Italian chain marked CU SU so I guess that means it is only gold ionized or something like that. It is pretty. It was time to get off the wet sand on the mile plus walk back to the car. I walked around the area where I had found my Franklin 50 Cent piece and nothing new. I went through the area nearby where I had found some recent silver and then followed my pattern back to the car. It was a warm day and I had to keep myself slowed down at about the 3 hour mark to keep in the game. Then I got the 35 on the Equinox and it turned out to be only my second silver 50 cent piece. I don't think I've held one of these since I was a kid. In the same general area was the 1944 Quarter and a couple of silver dimes. That makes for a pretty good day. These are the best of the finds with two wheat pennies. Just after I found the ring which is unmarked I got a 5 on the 800. When I dug it I could see the chain hanging out of the scoop. Then you feel it and know the weight is not quite right even tho the color is good. Then later I saw the markings and now it is stylish but not solid gold. I gridded the area and kept telling myself that chains don't sound like coins. Then about half an hour later I did get a coin sound and what a nice coin it is. This has not been touched as far as cleaning. It is one of those substantial coins that when you hold it it feels good. So you settle down and get to work looking for more. It was not long after and I had the quarter and a couple of dimes and the wheats. This was the way it all looked when I dumped it in the containers after the hunt. The saw blade was quite odd. I'll go back to that area one day at the beginning of my hunt rather than at the end. Mitchel

I have an 800 that I use at the beach. Sometimes it drops and this causes the plastic stand to break. I glue it but it has happened about 3 times and soon I won't be able to glue it. It is time to get a new cuff/stand. I'm really not interested in new shafts but ... I use the 15" more than any coil if that makes a difference. Mitchel

Apparently these kinds of interviews have been occurring for a couple months with various detector experts (and dealers) around the world. Except for a post buried in a thread (credit to Dances with Doves for calling my attention to these), which I didn't figure would reach the full audience, I think this is the first post of these four episodes with Gerry which were uploaded to YouTube on the 18th & 19th of April. Basically each of the first three episodes covers the one of the new coils separately and sequentially: 5"x10" (~19 minutes), 9"x14" (~22 minutes), 15" round (~44 minutes) and a wrapup segment (~11 minutes). I'm posting just the first one as each successive one is linked by Trevor at the end of the previous. E.g. to see part 2 (9"x14" discussion) just move the video's scroll cursor to the end of part 1. I watched episodes 1,2, and 4 in their entirety and the first 15 minutes of episode 3. A lot of the general info is second nature to seasoned detectorists. But there were a couple tidbits and I like being reminded now and then of the basic principles.

Hello from Texas! Just purchased a used Nox 800 as a back up machine and for my wife to try. She love swinging but hates digging 🙂 . The software was confirmed as updated to 3.1.3. Each time I start it up it chatters uncontrollably and has the code "AU" showing on the screen (see attached photo) Anyone know how to solve this? I have tried everything and can't find anything on the net to quiet it down. I made sure all connections are clean and secure, removed and cleaned coil/cover, tried each detecting mode (all chatters the same), factory reset, have tried noise canceling, ground balancing, lowering sensitivity, and keeping it away from EMI (does this at home and at the beach) and turned off my mobile phone...no fix. Hope this can be easily fixed by a setting or perhaps maybe re-installing the 3.0 update. If not, maybe it is the coil. FYI, also have an Equinox 800 as my primary machine and NEVER experience this issue. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Was swinging the EQ-800 the other day and hit this nice specimen. I realize all the love is for the new GPX-6000, but come on, the reality is most folks can't afford it. There is still plenty people having fun with the VLF's.

I like detecting for a variety of gold and really enjoy finding the stuff many higher end detectors can't see. I don't know yet, but feel the extra capabilities of the GPX-6000 will open up some of these areas I hunt with the VLF's to get even more of the gold and at greater depths or in worse soil conditions. As long as I am getting more gold, I'm happy. Will the new GPX-6000 see this kind of gold or act like all other PI's and the ZED and not see at all? I recently recovered this 4.2 gram speci with the EQ-800 while running the new CoilTek NOX 15" round. My goal was to find a piece of gold with the 15" and I met that goal. Part of some other testing back at base proved why I still like to take 2 detector technologies in the field. This particular beauty was found right in the middle of a GPZ-7000 grid area, along with 4 others while using different coils on the EQ-800. All 5 pieces specimens have visible gold and a couple how quite a bit, but to the point. The reason I found them in that gridded area, is because the GPZ-7000 does not respond or on a couple right near 1" and that's it. I teach folks this in my classes, as well as try to educate others on the goods and the bads of different detectors and technologies. Sometimes I get detectorists who are good hunters with their detectors and have success, tell me I'm full of BS and their detector will find it. I made a post on my FB (Gerry McMullen) and shared a pic of the find along with the true comments of, the GPZ will not see it. Between the private messages and or public posts, I was immediately informed by a few of BS and even told how I must not know the GPZ-7000. One well known GP-3500 hunter even said he guaranteed his 3500 would hear it. I know gold detectors and I know how to find gold with a variety of gold machines. No I am not the best, but I most certainly can hold my own and I learn to adapt really fast to a new area. Traveling to different states and countries to hunt for and find many different kinds of gold has helped elevate my detector knowledge and skill of many models of detectors and the differing Au rocks I have collected. So here is hoping the GPX-6000 with it's GeoSensing can respond to this little beauty. If it does, I know of some areas I'll be swinging the 6000. If it is like the GP-3500, the GPX-5000 and the GPZ-7000 and misses it, that fine too, I know what they can't see and realize it, I will also know where not to use the 6000. Bottom line for everyone. Please learn the kinds of gold your detector is good at finding and what it is not, so you aren't wasting time in those areas. Or be sure you have at least 2 different detector technologies.

I really like the coil. It has a sharp detecting edge and is fast. It was nice out. Was 55F. I went to field next to an old school house where I've gotten old coins before. I went to a different area. There was emi and used 15 khz and it ran smooth with sensitivity 24, 2 tone, recovery 4 (should have used 6, lots of iron), Iron bias F2 0. The single tones run so smooth. Only one keeper, maybe drawer pull?

I have a question regarding how the Equinox throttles back sensitivity when it encounters black sand. If I am running at 17 sensitivity on a salt water beach and detect over black sand; the machine throttles back sensitivity. By how much does it do this? What would be the sensitivity when the black sand indicator is active at 17? This leads me to wonder. If running at 25 sensitivity and the machine encounters black sand, is it going to be a higher number than the previous scenario? I also realize, that at 25 the machine will probably throttle back sensitivity much sooner than at 17... Just curious, thanks!

I am not liking my EQ600 with 15” coil and am wondering if it’s just my brain is too attached to my CTX, or if something is wrong with the coil or detector. I am noticing that the coil cable is being sensed if moved when I’m detecting so I did this little video test that uses my car as a ferrous background/target. If I move the cable with it in the background it senses the movement. But if I do it in air, no detection of the cable. I’ve never seen this discussed or tried before so don’t know what to think about it.

My day started by taking my wife to breakfast and a trip to a local greenhouse. On our way back we drove by a place I have wanted to hunt for a while and couldn't because the owners were just not to friendly. But low and behold I noticed some new house development signs. I did a quick title search and found out it was sold and being developed very soon. So I grabbed my stuff and headed back to this 1830's house. Today was the first day since I got the 800 I could spend more than an hour and a half detecting. My first two hours were a pretty much a bust except a cool silver plate spoon and my wife texting me to see if I found anymore jewelry? (NO) I was getting a little frustrated and decided to focus on a small strip of grass (three feet wide) next to the driveway and an overgrown pasture. After five feet I got an OK 28-29 signal that was kind of bouncy. First good coin popped out a 1905 barber quarter (yes) Things were looking up. I jumped across the driveway and hunted near a rather young pine tree. Two swings and boom a 24-26 and out comes a 1919 mercury. Things are getting interesting. I stood up after digging the merc, swung again got 23-24 at 9 inches out comes a coin that had me wondering what the hell is that. after a little quick cleaning I realized I had a 1832 classic head 1/2 cent. But this was no ordinary 1832 this has an over stamp with a cross and the initials FZ. It seems that it was stamped early in its life. I'm wanting to know if anyone has ever found a coin with stampings? I have found a lot of good coins, but this has now become my favorite. The day came to an end and I had to go and enjoy some burgers on the grill. Almost forgot the spoon, Its an american airlines made in the 1930's with the shape of a dc-3 and the words flagship on it.

Went to a local park today after work. Only had a couple of hours to detect and test out my new home made arm cuff. I wasn't a big fan of the plastic, and it was a little too wide and flexy for me. At this point I only have about 5 hours on the 800. The first hour today netted me a handful of clad and some misc. corroded zinc. The next hour was the same thing clad and junk. With only 15 minutes to chicken parm, I got a really nice 28-29, not expecting anything great, I proceeded to find out what it was. For a split second I thought it was another odd piece of stainless, But I quickly saw Tiffany and co. Wooooo Hoooooo. Now I had a good excuse for being a little late for dinner. My wife would never get mad for a Tiffany ring. It is about 6.16 grams and polished to like new. Oh and the cuff was a winner too. fits my arm and no slop. I made it out of an old no parking sign and the factory bottom section. It took me a few hours to create, but I'm happy with it. Have to give a shout out to Kac for the hand digger, Still works great and hasn't failed me yet.

Well after a long frustrating wait for Nokta's multi frequency machine, I could no longer wait or hold out. I received my new equinox 800 on the 19th and did some air tests and made a list of the VDI's and played with flipping the tones for my liking. After thinking the machine was just OK with some of my basic testing, It was time to run across the street to give it a run. I will tell you all that I have hunted this area to death with my MK. ( or so I thought) I only had 90 minutes to give its first test. I decided to dig every target with an 18 or higher VDI. Just trying to decifer my new sounds. First 5 min. netted some clad, but the next 85 broke all my records. first 3 coins after the clad were large cents, the next was a draped bust 1/2 cent (bucket 1) The next was a paper thin copper with a shield, could it be? Yes it was a New Jersey copper. I have been chasing this coin for years (bucket 2). Then a single button and an Israeli 1/2 shekel (not sure how that got there). I only had a few minutes left to hunt when I got a faint 18 on the nox and hit a button at 10 inches, But that wasn't all this hole had to give. It was like a button slot machine, 12 in all and total of 15 inches down. My wonderful wife called and I had to leave for dinner. I have to say the most impressive feature on the nox is the noise cancel, It made the site come back to life. As for settings, Park 1, sensitivity 17, and custom tone breaks and t1 - 1 t2- 25 t3 - 15 t4 - 10 t5 - 5 Tone sounds, I run them to get low tones on copper targets. Sounds odd I know, but it works for me. Have to say I'm impressed with the first 90 minutes I've run the 800.

The ground is mild. I buried a 14k gold ring 3.77 grams at 15", 14" then 13". Equinox 800 w/ 11" coil got a nice hit at 14" with coil raised 2". Neither would hit it at 15". Used multi tone Park 2 & Gold 1. Equinox would hit the ring in the single frequencies also. 40 khz was nice. Settings. sensitivity 24, 2 tone, recovery 4, iron bias f2 0. Anfibio Multi w/ Mars Discovery 13" would hit the ring at 13". 14" no hit. Setting, 20 khz, Sensitivity 92, Deep mode, 4 tone and 2 tone. Disc 6, tone break 0, isat 0. Anfibio w/ Nel Superfly 11x12 would barely hit the 13" ring. 14" no hit. I was surprised the Anfibio didn't go as deep as the Equinox on the gold ring. So with my test the Equinox is the best gold jewelry hunter over the Anfibio for my lakes by 1"+. Not a great difference. I will be hunting this summer in the lakes with the Equinox and the Anfibio will be my backup. I would like to know how the Tarsacci would do in this test with both coils. Would it be able to hit a gold ring similar size as the one I used in mild sand at 14"? I hope someone does this test and lets me know. A gold ring at 14" in a sandy beach is a tough test for any detector. For the Equinox to pass this test is impressive. Rick

I was out for a beach hunt this morning for about two hours! Hunted mainly the wet sand! On the return trip back down the beach, i switched to the upper dry sand! Nothing i haven't done before! After about ten minutes, i got an Err 41 and the unit shut off! Tried to turn on several times, and the error code would repeat and shut off! Did full reset a few times, but same thing! I still had two bars on the battery, so i didn't think it was a power problem! I thought maybe an overheat problem in the coil or control head! Went back to the surf to cool the coil off! And kept the control head in my shadow as i walked back down the beach to the stairs (about 8 minutes)! Tried turning the unit back on, and presto! It was working again! I detected another 5 or so minutes without any more issues! OK all, any ideas for the issue! And what is Err 41?? I can't find a reference! Thanks!!👍👍

I posted this on another forum other than Detector Prospector also. I feel Detector Prospector tends to be a bit more technical oriented than the other forum so I posted it here also. I am 100% all in on the Equinox. I like it so much I have 2 800's. My biggest gripe is how susceptible it is to EMI. Some of my best spots have EMI so bad I have to turn the Nox down to like 15 or below. I used to run a Nokta Impact in 14kHz as my main detector before I got the Nox and it had EMI issues also, but I don't remember it being quite as bad. I think the Nox is a much hotter detector than the Impact is. It's sure a lot deeper than the Impact. I don't have the problem everywhere so I know it's not a detector problem. Running a smaller coil helps some, but not a lot. So I've had an Etrac and never once did I have any audible EMI issues. Is it Multi-IQ that is susceptible or what? Do power companies check for EMI issues like bad connections or transformers that may be the culprit? Most of my issues have been in the older parts of towns where the power infrastructure tends to be much older. How many other people with the Equinox notice EMI is worse on it more than other detectors they use?

Is setting FE at zero result in the same behavior as setting FE2 at zero? Also, if you set FE for instance, and get out of special settings mode, the FE setting takes precedence over FE2? It’s not like you have to worry how both are set, just the last set one?

I have an EQ600 with a full set of coils. I was at Laguna yesterday with the large coil. I am using bluetooth earbuds that have been recommended by others. There was a lot of black sand where I was hunting. I was having the detect audio stutter like it was overloading bluetooth or the headset although I played with the detector audio and couldn’t reduce the stutter. There also seemed to be indications of a bad coil connection at the coil. Wiggle it a bit and you hear a crackle. Never got a full disconnect though. I later ran all metal and maybe the stutter was less not sure. In disc I was stock settings masking zero and below. But that should be a nice audio cancel - should hear good targets without them being chopped up. I found stuff but it was a miserable detecting experience. I played with recovery speed and went between beach 1 and 2 modes. Tried messing with ground balance types too. I found that if I was in black sand areas pinpoint would help me locate possible targets and I’d just dig them without much clue from Lcd ID or tone (running 50 tones). I didn’t have the other coils with me to test. I tried sensitivity 17 on up. Normally was 22/23. I was experiencing bad latency with the earbuds that I don’t remember being an issue with the 11” coil. Just a real test of my brain the whole day.

After following EQ's progression I decided to buy the 800 hoping for a "simpler" detector than the GPX5000 which I sold. Part of that decision was based on one of Gerry's posts along the lines of "I've found more with a sub $1000 machine than all the more expensive ones ". My 1st time out proved to substantiate the claims made that the EQ will find small gold and larger as I found what I classify when dry washing as a -20 and found a 4.29 gram nugget! This while not fully understanding how to operate the detector! Using the "quick start' and owners full manual I was able to succeed. I hope there are some comprehensive videos out now that I can access?

Thus far I have been highly impressed with the Equinox ability to handle high mineral. But...up until Tuesday, the most severe I had hunted in thus far would be 3 to 4 bar Fe meter type clay (on F75). There, the machine runs stable and can achieve good tones and numbers for most items down to 10 inches for high conductors and slightly deeper for low conductors. Very good considering most other machines drop off at about the 6 inch range. Tuesday I went to my bullet range...which is 4 and 5 bar soil. It will be the toughest I run the machine in. This place requires pulse machines to be efficient to be honest with you. I've never had a machine to do well there in discriminate mode. The Equinox also struggled there but I did land on a few tweaks that may help you guys should you encounter harsh soil. 1. Recovery speed. Go faster. If you think slower = deeper, forget it. Play around til you find the one that gives you decent depth...ride the line. 6 is default for most modes, and of course 8 is max. 7 is the compromise I think. You do lose some depth but it's nothing compared to what you lose in harsh soil with a slower recovery. 2. Coil position is CRITICAL. I dug some decently deep 3 ringers Tuesday....12 to 13 inch range. The only way I got them was to first run all metal. When you come up on a signal, you will hear iron mostly. Until you pinpoint the target to the exact center of the coil. If it is non ferrous and deep, you will be able to start getting positive numbers and tones JUST directly center of the coil/target. Move a little left/right or forward/back off center, and it's iron. If all you hear is iron with it centered....its iron. I dug some bullets that were 7 to 9 inches that came through loud and clear with iron disc on...but the deeper ones would be easily missed with iron disc on. I'm not use to seeing that kind of depth out of a vlf machine in soil that bad...much less one doing it in disc mode. If this machine had a true motion all metal mode on it, I feel it would have been legendary relic hunting status. It is good the way it is now...but wow. I can't wait to see how it handles with the larger coil when it arrrives. Most people are anxious for the small 6"....I'm more interested in the bigger one. I ended up with 13 minie balls Tueaday in a place in which the last few trips there, I hadn't dug but 1 or 2. I honestly left early and could have dug more but I had saw what I needed to see to know "this dawg will hunt in bad soil.
