It is a brass piece of horse tack stamped "U.S" that is fastened to the bit that is connected to the bridle/reins on a mounted cavalry horse.

Make yourself a rake magnet, I had one myself worked pretty good.. You need about 4 super magnets  just stick them above the tines you can rake squares you want to detect. Takes a little time but so does digging trash...
