  1. Equinox did not replace X-Terra. Minelab continues to produce both. X-Terra is much less expensive. There are two parallel threads running which I rarely allow but did in this case. See this post by Jin on the other thread. It appears Vanquish is positioned to come in above X-Terra and below Equinox in the lineup. That implies something in the $499 - $649 range.
  2. I will fix or delete that old link. Thanks for the new upload... saved me a little work! Just a note to forum viewers who are not forum members. 3. After noise cancel reducing gain has a dramatic effect on EMI. The lowest I have had to run is 14. Most people refuse to reduce gain that low. Another thing to watch... are you hunting in all metal, no target id numbers blocked? Most EMI comes in at certain low range numbers. Simply blocking the offending numbers will quiet things down. It starts where it starts though and different modes have differing EMI sensitivity. If Field 2, for example, is too noisy, try Field 1 instead. Interesting to me is that high recovery speeds tend to enhance EMI by putting a sharper edge on the noise. Settings of 6 and higher are extra noisy, try 5 or 4 instead. As has been mentioned going to single frequency combined with the above notes will almost always solve an EMI issue. Use the Gain setting as your guide. I would rather run a single frequency at Gain 21 than in Multi at Gain 14 for instance. Every time you try an option, see how high the gain can go before things get too noisy. I love the last post... people tend to forget small coils almost always work better in high EMI locations. It is literally a reason to own one.
  4. It was a really great time Dick. In every regard the trip and hunt was really enjoyable. Glad you like the story. I write them as much for me as anyone else these days. My memory for long past events is poor enough many of the details would go lost unless I record them. I highly recommend anyone into adventures of any sort keep a journal and take lots of pictures. It’s far too easy to get into the game and not take time for that sort of stuff, but ultimately the memories or records are all we have.
  5. The GPZ is like a super VLF that easily detects saltwater, making it a poor candidate for beach use.
  6. Sadly it looks like with Tom Boykin's departure that the newly revived Discover Magazine may be gone again. No new issues since June 2018 https://www.whiteselectronics.com/discover-magazine/ of what was a bi-monthly publication.
  7. Looks like the forum has been made invisible except to registered members. Not a wise decision in my opinion. http://forums.whiteselectronics.com/
  8. I am quoting from this YouTube page so I am just repeating whoever posted it. The MD-Hunter Blog likes to make things up but also does have info at times that is ahead of the curve. The problem is you never know which is which! This screenshot from https://md-hunter.com/wiki/minelab/ is projecting three models: Vanquish 340, Vanquish 440, and Vanquish 540

  11. The Minelab Vanquish 540 is a new metal detector announced by Minelab and with product shipping in 2020. The Vanquish 540 is a multifrequency VLF detector with a unique collapsible rod system and 12" x 9" DD coil. Follow Minelab Vanquish threads on the Minelab Metal Detector Forum for the latest news. 12. Bobby pins are a pain - one of my least favorite targets.
  13. If the machine is screaming at you reduce the sensitivity until it stops. I have had to run as low as 14 in some places to get the machine to behave and can imagine situations where even lower settings would be required.
  14. I never had the pleasure of meeting Jim. He did correspond with me a few times, and without fail Jim went out of his way with kind commentary. A real gentleman for sure... Rest In Peace.
  15. Cosmetic if you are nice or gimmick if you are a cynic like me Now that DeepTech has dealers and a service center (green on map below) in the U.S. I will add their detectors to the detector database. http://deeptech-bg.com/contact-us

  17. My F-Pulse works fine with my Equinox 800 if I turn the pinpointer on first, then turn on detector and do a frequency scan. The setting seems to hold between uses because I don’t have to do it every time. Still my main use pinpointer with Garrett Carrot for backup.
  18. Yes. People call or email and ask questions of manufacturers all the time. They won’t always answer questions but they will answer a lot more than people think. Personally, given the complaints about the ATX coil cables, Garrett would be smart to tell people the cable has been upgraded. If it has not, they would either say so, or ignore the question, which is the same thing. I don’t know this for sure but I suspect the coil cable issue has been vastly overblown. First of all, it’s only the water guys making the complaint anyway. And out of those only a minority, but minorities can be noisy on the Internet. Garrett may simply not be experiencing failures at the rate people assume, and so they may consider replacing coils with failed cables to be the more expedient route, especially if they have a 10,000 foot reel of the stuff on hand! I do not have an ATX at this time but if I wanted another concerns about the coil cable would not be enough to put me off. All detectors can fail but the odds are so low of that happening with any of them I just do not see it as a factor in my purchases. I assume all detectors will fail and always have a backup which greatly reduces any worries.

  20. Hi Jay, welcome to the forum! Yes, GM1000 ground tracking is built in and always on. Volume and sensitivity are separate controls.
  21. I hunt mostly in city parks, public beaches, National Forest, and BLM land. I never ask permission to hunt public land. I know the rules permit what I am doing so I don’t have to ask. I do get a metal detecting permit to hunt city parks if such a permit is required. I almost never hunt private land but if I do it is with the property owners permission.
  22. I am not aware of any changes to the ATX but that does not mean there have not been any. No upgrades were ever announced, that’s for sure, so no reason you would find info that does not exist. Manufacturers however often make model changes without announcing anything. Have you asked Garrett?
