No Tracks Since The Upgrade - GPZ

Recommended Posts

While up in the Sierra for a WSPA Outing I used my gpz. I had not used it since I did the upgrade.

When I pushed the map button the man-icon came up but there were no tracks. The unit would mark a point and display it but no tracks to see where I had wandered.

I also noticed the unit would not return to correct threshold in a timely manner. Nor did the other functions always work correctly...

two different issues I think. What say yea?

I did the upgrade on mine and it's showing little blue lines which I assume are the tracks.... I don't see any maps per say (do base maps need to be loaded) but the tracks are there.

Thanks, Jennifer, no uploading of maps possible....I just meant the map button on the gpz that takes you to the tracks and grid....

The GPZ resets everything to default when doing a firmware upgrade. You have to turn the GPS back on, and you have to reactivate the "View Geotrail" function (see below).

I am not sure about the other issues, not enough info.

Sorry, was on my iphone and didn't really clearly explain what I was saying... I'm just starting to use the GPS function (and Minelab has no Youtube videos about it) and was actually asking if we had to load maps before hand as all I see on my screen are the blue lines, long/lat etc that I (as Steve mentioned) had to turn back on after the upgrade.

Does the GPZ have GPS maps in it nativly or do you have to upload them before hand to see roads, etc. on your GPZ screen or is it strictly a track recording device that you need to upload onto your home computer to see actual map data?

I reckon I could read the manual but you all are much more knowledgable.

Hi Steve;

I reset the gps to enhanced. The gps did work and I could mark wp and fp's...however the tracks which would normally show whether I was saving a geotrail or not, did not appear, ever...

twice, I reset the  whole system and set every thing up per spec...no tracks.I am thinking the machine is slipping into those nefarious intermittent problems..like me getting older not everything is as it should be...

That is correct, Jennifer...but, I don't think the upgrade allows the x-2 at this time....

Thanks Fred.....

It may be worth reflashing the OS (redo the update again). One GPZ update that I did for a friend, I had to do twice to get it to work properly (the first flash failed but a second one completed successfully). You may just have a bit mismatch that doing that will fix.

Hi Fred,

Did you activate "View Geotrail" as described above? Also, if in a new session, you have to load old Geotrails before they are visible. See below - Show a Saved GeoHunt On the Map. View geotrail must also be activated as described in my last post.

Jennifer, you cannot load terrain maps, all you can record or reload are tracks or locations.

It is possible to mark landmarks as locations and load them. Camp, that old prospect, etc.

GPS Mapping With The Minelab CTX And GPZ Detectors ( Part Two )

I really need to get part three done and posted. I am now procrastinating however waiting to see if the upgrade Minelab makes to XChange2 has things which would make my final post in the series obsolete before I post it.

Thanks for the great info Steve.... just uploaded the current version on my Macbook Pro (with Windows as dual boot) so I could familiarize myself with what it does. I have the update so won't bother hooking up the detector yet till they make it compatible, thanks for the info.

Have a video on Audio Smoothing up on the Minelab YouTube channel for those interested.
      Hope this helps

      Prior thread in subject

The Minelab GPZ 7000 audio Smoothing function was directly derived from the Stabilizer control used on the GPX series. From JP at http://www.detectorprospector.com/forum/topic/715-gold-i-found-in-victoria-with-the-gpz/?p=6424

"On the subject of Audio Smoothing: Off on the GPZ = 20 on the GPX 5000, Low equals 15 and High equals 10."

JP at the link referenced obviously prefers Smoothing to be left off. Some people are experimenting with higher audio smoothing settings combined with either hotter Gold Mode settings or higher Sensitivity settings or both. I think this is a good thing so do not go thinking it is "wrong". There is no right or wrong per se, it is all about what works for each prospector and their personal tolerance for noise or the lack thereof. Experimentation is good.

I thought it would be informative to copy what the GPZ manual (page 66) has to say about the Stabilizer control. Warning: the GPX Stabilizer control is backwards. The highest setting if 20 is the off position. Lower numbers increase smoothing. So the GPZ at off is same as GPX at 20 (off). Note that the GPZ High setting is the same as the GPX default setting of 10. The default for the GPZ 7000 is Low Smoothing which is the equivalent of a setting of 15 on the GPX.

One final note. RX Gain as referred to on the GPX is the same as the Sensitivity control on the GPX.

      From the GPX manual:

I guess I should say that my preferences tend to follow JPs - I run with audio Smoothing off under nearly all circumstances. But I wanted to make this post to create a thread on the subject as it is very clear people are having success with other ways of thinking and again, I like out of box thinking. Lunks settings at http://www.detectorprospector.com/forum/topic/830-lunks-zed-settings/ are at the other end of the spectrum. I also liked Jason's observation on the subject at http://www.detectorprospector.com/forum/topic/827-minelab-video-gpz-7000-ground-type/?p=8276

      Hey guys,
I hate being the guy asking for help on the forum. But, I'm really struggling and hope some of you with more experience on the GPZ might be able to share some insight.
So, here's the scenario. I have what I think is an old equipment pad I've been working. I've nicknamed it my "trash patch" since it is just hammered with trash, probably why it doesn't appear to have be detected much even though close by areas have been beat to death. I found my first nugget in there with my GPZ at about 8", The problem, so much trash I couldn't even keep a single target under the 14" coil. I went back this week and spent 2 1/2 days (sun up to sun down) with my GB2 cleaning about a 2500sf area of trash. I can't begin to know how many targets were removed, but I can tell you my legs are so sore from that many squats I can barely walk today. Once I got the area clean, I was super excited to get back over it with the GPZ and see what I could find.
And, here's where we get to the help part. This entire pad has basically been built with about 3" of crushed hotrock. I thought getting the trash out was the biggest issue, but it wasn't. I can't figure out setting on the GPZ to get through the top layer. Either it just wobbles and whines all over the place, or you choke the settings down so hard it won't pick up anything. I can't find a working medium. Short of racking and shoveling 3" of rock off this area, which moves way outside the bounderies of enjoyable hobbie for me, I'm not sure what to do.
Anyone have some detector settings I might try, or other ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Attached are 8 little micro nuggets I pulled off the surface cleaning trash with the GB2. Everything I have got more than 2"s below the rock layer has been larger.
      Thx, Beau

This is pretty neat stuff, and I think the applications for prospectors and relic hunters are obvious...

      another ---- question from me...
Is there a "easy" way to move my google earth account from my old computer to my new computer.  I would like to keep the waypoints I have...just because I like them...
remember, small words and simple directions for fred...
      thanks

The other day I pulled up Google Earth as usual but now the navigation and zoom controls and the tool bar icons are very tiny. And now my placemark labels are larger than normal. I cannot figure out how to reset it back.
      Has anyone else experienced this?
