Got out with my buddy Dave today to do some detecting. We had the plan to try a new area, and if that didn't pan out we would go back to the area I had had some luck the last 2 outings. We struck out in the new area, and headed to the old one. I went out trying to expand on the new patch...no luck. Dave hung around the area where I found the patch 2 weeks ago. I started exploring a bit looking for good ground when Dave radioed me that he had found a couple nice nuggets. I made a beeline to meet up with him, still working my GPZ when I hit a great mellow signal. Turned out to be a 2+ gram nugget and the start of a 5 nugget patch. Biggest being 3g. We had lunch a made another run for no luck, but a great day nonetheless. My nuggets 6.4 grams Dave's score, with a nice big nugget. Chris

Well, these aren't as impressive as Gerrys, but I can attest that it is a real upgrade to the GMT.

I visited a site today where my Etrac has found a worn Mercury dime and some wheat cents in the past; but, it struggled with the trashy ground. I thought this might be a site where my Equinox could make some additional finds. I got a 1917 Mercury dime in outstanding condition, probably dropped close to 100 years ago, and two additional wheat cents from the 1930s.

Hey just got an Equinox 800 last week, my first detector. First of all thanks for all the info, it has really helped me figure out this thing! So far I've only detected around the house and found a wide range of trash: Nails, stakes, nuts, bolts, old chunks of iron, shell casing, a piece of buckshot, molten aluminum nugget from a bonfire, stainless steel wire, tarp grommet, bottle cap, tin can lid. Nothing amazing but happy with the results, right now I'm digging everything with a consistent signal to learn, figuring out the Target ID and learning the sounds. Probably a little tough area to start at, but as soon as I figured out the sensitivity and ground balance, the signals are much clearer, I've been impressed how deep it has found some things. Also suprised I haven't dug any hot rocks yet, there are a lot of rocks in our driveway that are magnetic and I expected to be having to dig a lot more, but so far haven't dug one. Thanks again for all the advice on here, excited to go look for some nuggets and lost stuff. Really happy with the machine, love the wireless headphones! Seems hard to beat for an "all-around" type machine.

Getting a week at the beach for a little R & R and yes detecting. I must be honest my first day was not that grand (two zincs and a shell casing) with the Equinox 800. Hunted with the stock beach 1 program with no adjustments found very little in the way of nice finds. I had high hopes the beach was like it was a couple years ago, but sand had been hauled in and built up by maybe 5'. Even the wet slope didn't yield much in the way of finds. But decided to hunt the towel line the second day and found a matching set of earrings some 4" deep at the edge of where high tide and the towel line began. Talk about small, but the Equinox had no problem finding small targets.

I decided that since it's been a while from my last visit to one of my favorite gold hunting locations It was time to charge up the batteries, brave the heat and find some gold. Only managed to dig up these 3 little ones but still it was a good day ?

Ya ya, you're probably getting tired of all the "new Equinox just got gold" threads, but here is another. Same old tired cliche, first day out with new said wonder-machine, then BAM out comes a 8" deep, 1/4 ounce gold ring from a previously pounded location. Sigh. I mean come on, it was right under the soccer net, 4 feet from where I usually set down my drinking water. The place I stand when I look at other gold I find. The place that every newbie heads to. The place I did a tight over-lapping spiral around both posts with a Deus and a Lobo. The place that my 2 friends have detected on multiple occasions with a Deus and Etrac. Yet it was right there the whole time. I walked up to the net, dug a penny and thought "hmm, I'm surprised that is still there" but hey it is a multi-freq Mineslab right? No big deal, stranger things have happened. About 14"-16" away I get the almost identical signal, perhaps slightly jumpier, flickering 20-22 ID. I saw that soft edge golden glow in the bottom of the hole, I said "F-you don't be something or other" cause this place has gold toned aluminum scraps and beaver-tails that would make Peter Munk take a triple take. I thought the ring looked to be about 3-4 grams, my eyes almost bulged out of my head when I saw it weighed in at over 8 grams, a good size piece of alloy around here. It might be higher then 10K due to the heft, the mark is worn and my acids are expired so I will get it XRFed when I get a chance to stop in. This is my forth Mineslab and the third time something like this has happened. There was that week of silver running around town with a new Etrac, I also hit gold 45 minutes into a first water hunt when my Excalibur was new. My old friend deep 2 1/2" square nail is back, some of his big brothers too. They are a rough bunch to hang with but I usually get the old silver when they are around. For those wondering, the ring is a 22. I was in Park 2, 7 reactivity, sens21-22, multi-IQ

You are too kind.... the lack of anything remotely resembling poor behavior is a real testament to all the forum members. I was more worried about a troll or spammer joining in my absence and going nuts, and even considered disallowing new members while I was away. I did also figure if anyone tried that you would all step up and just run them off. Part of me just wanted to see what would happen though so I just let it go since truly nothing could happen that I could not clean up on my return as if it had not happened at all. I know people want to know where I went and what I was doing. Yes, I went to some old haunts in Alaska. It would be hard to have a better time than I did in all respects - truly a fabulous trip and wonderfully relaxing. Other than that I have emails and posts to catch up on first. The tale itself will be a long story since I am going to backtrack decades and tell you all a genuine story full of context and photos. What I did the last few weeks will simply be the exciting ending you will all have to wait for. Yes, I do like building a little suspense. I think the tale will be fun and enjoyable for all so all I can say is get ready for a peek at a part of my life in Alaska over the years. It will also be a journey through models over the years and how improving technology really can make a difference. I have only detected with Steve twice at Crow Creek, but both times I made an amazing discovery. The first discovery I made was that you don't ever let Steve get in front of you, the ground will be sterilized after he passes through. The second discovery I made was that you don't ever let Steve get behind you, he's like a turkey on a June Bug. Anything you miss, which is everything for me, he will have it in an instant. In other words, you get it the first time or it is gone forever, no second chances.

Thought I would share a few of my actual, field experiences with the Equinox 800. It truly is a turn on and go detector. The most accurate detector I’ve ever had on proper identification of buried targets over 5” in depth. No need to run high sensitivity to detect in areas where the sink rate is very slow. I’ve found a sensitivity of 16 will detect and correctly ID coins to 7” deep. There is no need to ground balance unless hunting is mineralized ground. Side by side comparisons with other detectors finds the Equinox will more accurately ID coins in the 6-8” range. This was very surprising to me. I’ve become very good at knowing what a coin is before digging. Very good example is a nickel verses a beaver tab by the audio/ID response (not one by itself) With use, there is a lot of target information is the audio response that lends to target identification. If you find an area where there is a lot of EMI and noise cancel doesn’t help, turn it down. See #3. In extreme trash the machine will still give an audio hint of good targets surrounded by other targets. Very versatile, even though the need to make adjustments are not common. Surprise, the more time you have with the Equinox the more I learn. Final note: It will take a lot to find a better machine on the market “today”.

I don't often find a teens Mercury dime in this kind of condition.

WTG Swifty! What he didn't tell everyone was that it was between 105-110 out there on Saturday with no wind. He also didn't tell you that in all of that sand there are some very hot rocks that mask gold. Swifty is a pro at it so he doesn't mention things like that. Mitchel

Both of my parents used the old coinmaster and I don't think they left many nickels. They would come back with a pouch full of pull tabs and bottle tops every time. They dug everything. My aunt did the same thing. Maybe there wasn't that much discrimination going on?

Hello and good week end to all !Went for a session this morning lots of eyes only searchers,i spend 2.5 hours digging on everything then end back to the exit stairs and decided to give a last go,i had victorian coins and yessssssss i strike GOLD so it is my 3rd precious metal finds in a row so well happy i havent clean it yet.But it hasn't been a while i striked gold like that . So the Lobo has proven again his abilities to find stuff in extreme condition .I am still looking for a 5.75 concentric for another lobo which i had had tuned to concentric. RR

I had to pick my wife off at the airport and it's a trip I usually dread but I decided to plan ahead. I threw my metal detector and fishing rod in the car and a lot of water and hit a couple spots along the way or at least in the area. I got my most pieces of silver ever in a single outing and had fun exploring some new water and ground.

Simple....old age. Alaska is no fun sitting through 7 months of cold and dark when you are too old to do the things you went to Alaska for. I'm in Siskiyou County on the Klamath River.

What I can add to this is rings. A ring will disguise itself as a gold tab. You won't find many but I dug what I was certain to be a gold tab this morning and it was a gold band.. Other than that I haven't dug a tab in weeks.

After digging many of these pesky targets I noticed the audio would be slightly elongated compared to a nickel. Now the other deciding factor is if the numbers are more toward the 12 than the 13 I'd lay odds of what it will be. Now using both the audio 1st and the ID numbers second I can say I'm as close to 99% sure of what I'm digging. I will add I'm more confident when it comes to IDing a nickel before digging. It's amazing just how much information the Equinox gives the user if they will listen very carefully. I must admit, it took me weeks before I started slowing down and studying the targets before digging.

Swinging along in the shallows this morning I eventually came across a coin spill. While the first scoop brought up a dime a couple other coins came to the surface along with what I at first thought was a twist off aluminum cap. Once in the scoop i realized it was a ring with a nickel stuck perfectly inside it giving the appearance of a cap. 4.6 grams marked 417. While I don't remember the TID with the nickel by itself it comes in 18-19 on the 800. The 14k 8.9 gram ring I got the other day read in the 20 to 22 range. the 35 cents in coin and a ring made for a nice "spill"
