  1. Typically I hunt in 18 khz when relic hunting. My ears have been trained to the tones in that frequency. Occasionally if pursuing coins I will use 12 khz. If I am in an area containing a lot of degraded cans I may switch to 4 khz. I have a custom 18 khz program in slot 11 and right next door in slot 12 a 4 khz program that has near identical settings. When I recieve a high tone signal in 18 khz that I think may be big iron, flat iron, or round iron I simply hit one button to switch to my 4 khz program. If the VDI stays the same or goes up it is iron. If the VDI number drops substantially it is USUALLY something non-ferrous. This technique also works well on crown caps. I do not use this technique if hunting a bed of nails. With the new coil we may be able to obtain similar results using a 20 khz program next to a 10 khz program. The VDI difference may not be as pronounced but hopefully will still be large enough for this to be a viable technique. I have noticed as the months go by and I become more proficient in the use of the Deus I need to use this technique less and rely more on interpreting the tones. There is a lot of info there if one takes the time to really listen.
  2. Aargh! My bubble of hope has been burst! LOL Thanks for your assessment Steve. I guess I will have to change coils more often if I want to employ all the frequencies.
  3. I agree with Steve that you will still be able to use the existing freq's with the larger coils. I am hopeful that the 6x9 will employ all available freq's. Existing and the new ones for a total of 8 available in the elliptical coil. This will make the Deus just that much more versatile. It is one of the things I like most about the Deus is the ability to handle multiple detecting scenarios with a few quick changes to the settings.
  4. In the United States in some areas the Zed may not be the best machine to use even though it is without question the best performing machine in most scenarios. In the area this nugget was found (Southern Oregon) the terrain many times is ungodly steep slopes covered with thick patches of nasty brush like Manzanita and Poison Oak. Due to over 100 years of logging and mining there is very often bits of ferrous wire and other assorted trash everywhere. This area is very unlike the American deserts or the Australian outback so in these conditions the preference of some miners may be to use a GPX and a 11R DD or 5x10 DD to get around in the brush on steep ground and have some form of discrimination. The finder of the above nugget only occasionally nugget hunts so does not feel the need to make a substantial investment in the purchase of a Zed. The GPX with its wide range of coils available is a more attractive option for him since he already owns it. DD's for patch hunting then switch to appropriate size monos once gold has been found works for him and for me in these difficult areas.
  5. The LRL manufacturers will probably start using the guts out of these to make their product more believable.
  6. I recently held that specimen. It is much prettier in person, a nice chunk of gold and quartz. This gold came from a location with very bad EMI. The ground had been detected hard with a GPX 5000 coupled to a NF 17EM and NF 12EM which were very noisy due to the EMI. The Detech ran good except at the very worst of the EMI when it was also noisy. Did the coil make the difference in finding this nugget? I think it probably did as the finder is a good detectorist not prone to newbie mistakes or sloppiness when working a known patch. I am considering purchasing this coil myself.
  7. If I am an Early Majority buyer w/ military discount my price would be $6370? This will likely drive the price of used units below the $5000 mark. Ouch!
  8. That's great you beat the skunk Peg! I hope you find a bunch more soon. You guys talking about Wilma's cooking are killing me. I dream of her bread fresh out of the oven-yummy Chris. you may have to get tighter fitting headphones to filter out Paul's palaver. It's like a bad EMI day!
  9. Beardog, I am glad you love your Infinium so. I could never connect with mine. More likely a statement of my deficiencies as a detectorist than the detectors fault. I wonder how long Garrett will repair this machine now that it has passed on. Will they pull a Minelab and leave those Infinium owners without factory support?
  10. I had an Infinium. Never did like it. It rode around in my RV for quite a while lonely, unused and unloved, until I found it a new home. RIP Infinium.
  11. Oh, I forgot to say, Makro, I would love a facsimile of this Bigfoot coil for my Racer. I want one for finding nail beds around old mining camps. That sucker could cover some ground.
  12. Steve, you are very tenacious. If lobbying one way does not achieve the desired results, switch gears and try another route. I like it.
  13. Does the fair RV park fill up during this event? Early reservations necessary?
  14. Dilek, Makro rocks! Thanks for listening to detectorists. I really like all the new features. My biggest complaint with my Racer is the dreaded 82 VDI target lumping scenario, were the engineers able to address this issue? I think you have a winner here.
  15. I am with Norvic, for me this hobby is all about the thrill of the dig. I care very little what the price of gold is other than I like to see it low so the number of people chasing it stays low. Come retirement time and the need to sell some arises I will likely have a different opinion.
  16. Paul , does is psuedonym start with an S? LOL
  17. Keep after it Paul. You are having fun with your new machine and really, isn't that what this hobby is all about?
  18. Klunker might not be jealous but I sure as hell am.
  19. Ray, that half is a beauty. I bet you have a smile glued on to your face. Congrats.
  20. There is a short but good synopsis at wikipedia here- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spencer_repeating_rifle
  21. Paul, if you are in between paychecks I can loan you enough money to buy some "Nail Fungus Treatment".
  22. I have not had the Gold Screamer. I have had 2 pocket rocket systems which I believe is the same thing without the amplifier. The system I used on my 3500 was golden, worked great with zero problems. Wish I could say the same for the system I put on my GPX. Pure junk. That sucker loved to ruin $50 batteries. I tried to give it to Klunker as payback for some mean things he said to me, LOL, but he was wise to my ploy, instead he tried to convince me I should take his Gold Screamer from his 5000 which was also total junk and try to combine it all into a workable system. I wasn't drinking that Kool-aid. I think we both are lugging the stock battery around now. That is only my experience and I am sure there are plenty of Gold Screamers out there providing wonderful trouble free service to their owners. Good luck with yours......
  23. No info on what lower shafts alone will cost. I would consider this mod for my 4500. It would ride better on my wheeler.
