  1. @tvanwho,micro jewellery when talking in the detecting context is usually describing say earrings or ultra fine gold chains that type of thing, basically the finished small gold items that are man made, but micro gold i think is what most folks could describe ultra small gold in its natural state as it comes out the ground like small nuggets etc. In the UK we dont have any gold fields but we of course do have some very old gold coins and jewellery that we do occasionally come across which is of course our holy grail of targets. I could be of course reading it wrong but that is how i understand it micro jewellery and micro gold, and notice we also spell jewellery different to you folks across the pond we also have alot of aluminium cans that we also spell differently
  2. That was of course put up on YouTube by Regtons on April Fools day still a good sense of humour
  3. One big difference is that you folks across the pond tend to hunt different locations to what we do over here in the UK and what i mean by this is that you are able too hunt in parks most of the time without any hassle from folks who have authority to stop it,but over in the UK 'almost' all our park are out of bounds as they tend to use the old trump card of health and safety issues,or the few parks that do allow metal detecting have a 'stupid' cop out clause that you are not allowed to dig down to retrieve the find/s.So basically we are unable to hunt in parks or recreational facilities unless they are private but then you still require the land owners permission. So we only tend to hunt on private permissions with of course the land owners permission, this is for the most part 'farm land' or pasture,as John was saying on farmland as a rule although we do get general rubbish of course ie iron etc we dont have as much problem if at all from the likes of ring pulls or foil as much, you will get some usually near a beauty spot or picnic area but its not a major problem as hunting in parks when you will find abundance of ring pulls and foil and cans. Our main targets that we are after are generally silver hammered coins these can go back say 2000 years or so,and these coins come in the foil range on a detector, also the silver content is not always the same as some are of a higher silver content and some of a much lower silver content,it all depends on how much silver was around at the time as too how much silver was in a coin.So what does this mean in the detecting sense, well if you knock out foil either by using discrimination, notching or what ever makers call it then 'you' will almost certainly knock out silver hammered coins an this is what most detectorist in the UK are after. Early gold also can vary by a massive margin,as gold standards had not even been thought about then, once again you could place a fair few gold items on the ground including say celtic gold staters, rings or what ever and of course if you have a screen based machine the TID could vary by a massive margin once again,so this is why we tend to knock out a small nail and then dig the rest.If you solely rely on making a dig-no dig decision just by looking at the screen after you have notched out foil or have alot of discrimination on then you will 'miss' alot of good targets. The Tesoro range of detectors from say the mid 80s ie the Silver Sabre range etc they became the holy grail of detecting over here especially on very trashy roman/saxon sites, not the deepest machines going but possibly the best discriminating machines going, then the Laser brand of detectors came out over here which are basically Tesoro main stream detectors but slightly modified internal settings wise for our ground conditions and also the targets that we are after,so we dont have such things as notching or anything like that, some of these machines within the Laser brand name like the legendary BI and B3 machines suited our sites to a tee and ticked all the boxes for our hunting requirements, and the find that folks got after buying these detectors just went through the roof. Around the world we all detect differently albeit they are all metal detectors, but if you detect in Aussie land or Nevada then you use a different type of detecting,of course gold is your target so the weapon of choice and the best platform is mainly a Pulse machine, but for us as we have some iron due to sites being habitable for 1000s of years then we dont want to dig iron, hence we dont use PI machines as much as you do. I do own a few Tesoro/Laser machines and they are good at what they do these are mainly for site specific use predominately trash roman/saxon sites, but technology moves on and no one detector/coil combination does it all,so its a tough one to find the perfect combination and as yet i still have not found that perfect machine. As i say we are all searching for metal, but all our targets are different and we all have to adopt methods for the situation we detect in. Of course this is only my take on the subject and i how i see it.
  4. Why go to all that complicated trouble to adapt something that probably would not work,K.I.S.S keep it simple stupid. Anderson shafts do a Whites Coil Weight that should cure the problem. The Anderson Coil Weight is designed to fit the Whites Dual Field and Beach Hunter 12” (300mm) Coil. The Coil Weight will help reduce buoyancy issues common to these coils. Coil Weights are made from an all natural material coated with a yellow poly finish. Comes with instructions and mounting ties. Coil Weight Although i have never used one that should sort your coil floating problem out
  5. Thats a shame,as it was my favourite coil on my DFX for nearly 10 years, found me a good few celtic gold staters over the years,a very reliable work horse of a coil, still have it on the detector these days but have moved onto the Deus and T2 as my main everyday detectors, but recently just bought a Laser Trident Extreme with the 11x8 coil on,that is rapidly becoming my all time favourite mainly due to the weight or lack of i should say.
  6. Cannot comment about the GMP being used for prospecting, but until about 3-4 years ago it was the most popular used detector over here in the UK till of course the Deus took its long held crown that is,the GMP was called the 'Hammered Hoover' for its ability to suck up our silver hammered coins because mainly of the 18Khz. But when the Deus came along not only was it so much lighter and more adaptable to our detecting needs and also it done exactly the same thing as the GMP one but also then 3 additional frequencies then the writing was on the wall that the GMP sales would plummet and that is exactly what happened. For general coin and artifact detecting the GMP was the King, dont have any info on the gold prospecting side of the detector, the fact that hardly anyone using one for gold hunting tells me its not the best machine on the market for the job, other dedicated machines would be in my honest opinion be the best route to take.
  7. John, the coils did not come from Jimmy, they are Jimmy's products but Miner John who makes the coils for him was selling them brand new from his Ebay outlet,so these had not been advertised on either the Miner Johns or Jimmy's main website, and of course the advantageous low price, possibly to reduce publicity of what was evolving behind the scenes. Of course i am not complaining, but i suspected something was not right when a brand new 20'' coil that had been selling for $500 i bought for $175 plus then the shipping, which you dont have to be 'Einstein' to work out that was a very good price,as you are aware that using such a coil even over here in the UK is not your everyday coil,as it would only be used a few times a year and hence tied up alot of money, but by buying them at the bargain price i was able to stock up on the coil arsenal. The TDI Pro is a very good machine John, prehaps you should look at getting one
  8. I was lucky to buy 3 brand new coils for my TDI Pro including the large 20'' Sierra Grande shipped over to the UK cheaper than say just one GPX coil, must admit was most suprised that the ultra low prices for a few weeks, this suggests a possible cash flow problem,as even if you did loose the Whites outlet you would normally sell of the existing stock at a higher price.
  9. Interesting video about how you use the GPZ with your harness setup, when i am using a PI with a large coil setup for deep hoard hunting here in the UK,if the coil size is say about the 15-16'' size then i will use a harness very similar in design to the Garrett ATX one and that usually works pretty well, but if i am say going to use a 20' Mono on the TDI Pro then i will either use a full GPX harness or a similar one made by a UK company to take the additional weight of the larger coil. I would only tend to use such a heavy rig for maybe a few hours just to hope to locate the large item that i am looking for or should i am looking for,i dont use large coils all that much maybe 5-6 times a year on pasture sites but without a harness one could not detect for very long due to the weight.
  10. I always used the Garrett finds pouch for years and years but i found that by the end of the day the pouch usually had a fair amount of trash ie iron and other general bits of rubbish, but a couple of time the weight pulled the pouch of my waist due to the weight. Rectified this by buying a shoulder slung military type find pouch which also attaches around the waist as per normal, but i dont have the problems of the pouch wanting to fall around my ankles anymore. You still find many folks here in the UK who have dug up lumps of iron and rubbish but leave it beside the hole that they have just dug,its called being bloody lazy and some even dont fill the holes in either. It gives ammo the the ant-detecting brigade to start shouting off about how bad we are and then try and find ways to ban this great hobby of ours.
  11. I use a $harp$hooter coil on my original T2,this is my personal opinion it is far superior than the T2 stock coil, its very sharp on small targets, great at pinpointing and although its just a bit smaller than the stock coil i dont think i loose a great amount of depth if any. Its great combination on our trashy sites and has found me a couple of Celtic gold staters and a George 111 full gold guinea,so it really works for me,another NEL coil i also use but much bigger is the NEL Storm 14''x13'' this of course gives you greater depth and ground coverage, but normally when one gets a larger coil you do tend too have some downsides usually you loose the sensitivity to smaller targets, but with the Storm coil on the T2 that is not the case it will also hit cut halves and roman minims which are incredible small and hard to hit even with the stock coil, but the Storm coil does it. If i was just to choose one detector and coil/s it would be the T2 and Sharpshooter and Storm coils,of course i dont nugget hunt like most folks do,but this combination does find me gold coins.
  12. John, thats a very nice piece of kit mate,i am just starting to make a very basic weekend camping setup in the back of my Vitara, nothing fancy just the very basics but comfortable so that one can sleep, eat and wash,as it will be just for the odd holiday weekend i dont need anything fancy. As long as i have space for my TDI Pro and the coils i will be perfectly happy What vehicle will you be using a Freelander or something else ??
  13. I also have just bought a TDI Pro that came with the stocK 12'' DF and 7.5'' DF coils, but i wont be using them as i am looking for extra depth in relationship to hoard hunting for any decent artifact but especially for one site that i have permission on it has produced 20 Celtic gold staters in a very tight radius, this indicates the chances of finding a hoard rather than say a purse drop. Also have bought 3 new additional coils these being the Coiltek 14''x9'' Goldstalker Mono,15''x12'' Commander Mono, and a Detech 18'' Mono,i wont be looking for small gold nuggets as i am based in the UK and we dont have gold fields but we do have some stunning gold artifacts and coins going back possibly 1000s of years. The Coiltek 14x9 coil will be replacing the DF coil as the stock coil as its not only lighter but i am finding it sharper on targets and a little deeper, infact its a very nice combination to swing for a all day detecting session,if i am then looking to go slightly deeper in my quest for artifacts or hoards, then the Commander coil will be the weapon of choice,it will be deeper and still be reasonably light, although i would think it would need a harness if used for greater time durations, but initial testing it is looking like a good detector/coil combination. Then we get onto the BIG fella the Detech 18'' coil, must admit when i bought it from a closing down sale i took into account the cost/usage/reward ratio into account, the reason being these coils can sit idle in a corder gathering dust for a long period of time as its not your everyday use coil, but the cheap closing down price ticked my purchasing decision, was expecting it to be a real heavy bruiser of a coil, but when it arrived i was amazed how light it was,but as it is a Mono then i guess you dont require double the amount of heavy wire as in a DD coil. Over time and as i get use to using the TDI Pro i will giv e some honest feedback on these 3 coil combinations,2 of the coils will be used alot especially the Coiltek one, must admit i am really pleased with that coil, its a pure pleasure to use,but its still early days and as the weather is turning for the better, then more detecting sessions will come along. Happy Hunting
  14. I use the Deteknix RF setup, must admit i personally find them very good,of course they are not in the same league as the Deus ones but they certainly do the job very well, dont notice any lag that i can tell anyway but they are about as good as perfect as what you would ever want from them. Prior to buying the Deteknix headphones i used the TDK700 setup for a very long time, they dont work on Bluetooth so dont have the lag that other systems using that BT freq, not sure exactly what setup they use but its pretty good, well it works on most of my VLF and a few of my PI machines.Only down side or problem with the TDK set is that if no audio signal is heard after i think its 2-3 minutes then they can shut down to save battery power, but if you have a audio threshold then they will stay on all the time. I still use both of these setups, but the TDK headphones are carried as backup in my bag just incase anything goes wrong, but anyway i always carry a set of wired backphones made by XP which cost peanuts basically but the sound quality from these backphones is unreal as it can be better that sets of wired headphones costing many many times more. Also another bonuss of these backup wired headphones they are very light and dont cause problems to your ears during the hottest days of the year.
  15. Going by the coinage that you have found you must be based in the UK ?? the large round thing could possible be part of a drain cleaning outfit for clearing sewer pipes out, usually made out of a rubber flexible type material for clearing blocked pipes without getting stuck while using cleaning rods.Could be wrong though. As you are finding rubbish and that drain cleaning end i am wondering if that field has had some form of green waste put on it ?? once again i could be wrong. Its nice to find some Georgian milled coins,i found a George 111 full Guinea last year in mint condition, got top dollar price for it as well as a few Viccy Sovereigns.
  16. Paul,i am pretty certain that Monte uses the letters ''OOR' meaning 'out of round' one example is the small Makro Racer small coil its something like say 5''x4.5'' so its not totally round nor is it i guess elliptical as such, its slightly 'out of round'
  17. The Hoxne hoard is possibly my favourite followed by the Staffs hoard, the roman lantern was found by Danny and his dad John Mills who are both very good friends of mine, alas John is seriously ill with a brain tumour. The Staffs hoard is possibly the most valuable of the UK hoards at the moment but i suspect many others are still waiting to be found and could even be of greater values, the goldsmiths work on the Staffordshire hoard although damaged for what ever reason in the past will just blow you away the skills of those early craftsman was just out of this world, when you take into account i guess it was all done by day light and candles and without glasses and magnifying lens. Thanks for showing the link
  18. Wow,that was a quick reply, many thanks for all your help,as its christmas time that has just gone on my present list from the wife. Thanks again.
  19. Many thanks for seeing if this coil will work on the TDI range
  20. Steve, read that earlier on findsmall, did you notice that he has grafted the guts of a GPX onto a Deus shaft, thats a nice looking rig.
  21. Will the new 14'' version work on a Whites TDI sl ??? i am aware that these have been designed for the GPX range but as i understand it the coils from the GPX range will work on a TDI but not the other way around ie TDI on a GPX. I wont be nugget hunting as we dont have any goldfields in the UK but it would be used for Relic/Hoard Hunting.
  22. By a massive margin it is without doubt the Deus and then the 2nd most popular detector would be the CTX3030,but the Deus would be used the most, both models the full setup and the Lite version are very popular infact if you strolled onto a field every machine i bet that you could see would be the Deus its that popular.
  23. XP UK is no less than Gary from Gary's Detecting,so he should have some good knowledge of XP detectors
  24. Colchester was one of the biggest roman locations in the UK and yes you will of course tend to find more roman coins/artifacts in that area just because of the hugh amount of activity rather than some locations that never had any form of roman occupation. Must admit i have been detecting for a very long time all over the country including roman areas as well, have found celtic gold full and quarter staters,George111 Guinea and Viccy gold sovereigns as well, but that was spread over many years and must admit i have found more than some folks who have been detecting longer than me. What gets me is that these detecting trips that are organised to bring folks across the pond to detect on a 2 week detecting jolly seem to find more gold in those locations that what we do,have never figured that one out,you look on the Colchester website and you will find some nice gold coins, staters, sovereign and also multiples on these digs, but we could go for a very long time duration without finding any gold coins,we do find many many silver hammered coins and staters but gold hammered coins are very rare and even these are the holy grail for us,but someone from the other side of the pond always seems to find something decent i guess these 2 week detecting trips must be big business
  25. Its a very good video and of course its more a PR video than anything and it does show you 'the most technologically advanced metal detectors on the market' and no question about it they are in the top tier detector makers, but even Minelab can make 'White Elephants' as well including some of the current Minelab machine they being the 'Go Find' range. Which still come under the Minelab brand name and not sure if they are made in house or what ever, but the reception for the lower end 'Go Find' range has been a total disaster for them as everytone who has bought them in the UK has offloaded them within a very short time duration at a massive loss.So although the YouTube video tries to portray they are the best they can also produce some sub standard detectors as well. Please note i am not knocking the Minelab brand but just highlighting a few facts, the GPX is one of my next machines but not for gold nugget hunting but for deeper hoard hunting,as these machines are superb for that.
