Arizona Outback And Finders Forums Gone?

Recommended Posts

Forums are very different to social media, forums are like an encyclopedia, you google search anything about detectors and you don't see Facebook come up, you see forums and the forums have the information you're chasing.  This particular forum tends to track at the top when searching for detector information.   Facebook is more on the spot information that quickly disappears to nowhere, long gone weeks after being posted never to be seen again.  It's preferred by the manufacturers as the large userbase, tens of thousands of users in groups related to detecting so yes, they have a bigger reach.   You can't beat forums for withholding important information so it's sad when they die, as with them goes years of knowledge.

Hopefully the decent users of closed down forums move onto the other good forums consolidating members to maintain good membership to the surviving good forums.

This is the only forum I really bother with, I have accounts on a few but rarely show up and even more rarely post anything.  A number of good people here who I like to communicate with and less of the trouble that drives forums to a slow painful death.

It was watching what happened to Finders in particular that had me formulate the rules in place here. Politics, and members trolling/flaming other members, will destroy any forum if left unchecked. It’s the forum variation of feeding the good wolf or the bad wolf. Here, I try to feed to good wolf in all of us.

Mike,

"IMO I think the owners of the forums should precipitate as well which I see a lack of  "

You are referring to forum owners generally I suspect.  The amount of very educational posts found on this forum certainly belie that statement, the posts I am referring to are from Steve H.

This forum is a gem, and the general quality and tone of most contributions is worthy of the time spent reading them.

Much valuable information available here at no charge!

I have learned a great deal from others over the years, and I think I have a responsibility to pass that knowledge on when I can. I can give it freely forever, yet it never runs out. Can’t beat a deal like that. And what goes around comes around. There are very many top notch forum members that teach me things constantly. The little secret is I set this place up to attract the best, so I could learn from them.

I’ve helped out Bill S. with a fundraiser on his site but he’s rarely on it anymore if at all too.  A couple of good and knowledgeable members are the only ones keeping it alive now days.  Bill keeps an archive of Jim Straight’s posts and a great meteorite thread alive on it, so I still visit often. But I have to admit I more often come here because of all the great information and help here.

The real tragedy with the closure/suspension of Finders is the loss of its Archive Threads/Posts, posted over some 22 years by genuine dedicated knowledgeable Prospectors..many now passed...Finders was fortunate to have Posters of the calibre of David De Havilland/Patches1 who was Author of iconic 'Gold & Ghosts' Books..a Treasure Trove of Australian Prospecting information and maps....Patches1 made literally hundreds of informative Gold Related Posts...others were Late, Janet/The Lady of The Lake who found much Gold on Western Australian Salt Lakes and willingly shared her knowledge ....Late, Chris Hake/Whitegum, a true Aussie Prospecting Legend from Kalgoorlie /Boulder WA environs..Chris posted thousands of informative and at times 'Robust' Posts..I have paid my respects at Chris's Gravesite in Boulder WA erected by Local Prospectors...he died in his 50's and much valuable Gold information died with him...beyond sad....Hoo Roo.

Suspended again..perhaps terminally this time..Finders has more Porn Links than genuine posts now...it has no Administrator, No Moderators, & No-Hope.....22 years of Archives will now be lost.....how could Finders hope to survive ,with its doors wide open to Offensive Porn Links.?..and no moderation whatsoever...it should not survive on this basis....beyond sad..
