New Patch Gives Gold X 2

So back at the end of June I scouted a new park and potential jewelry patch but due to oppressive heat and drought conditions in July and most of August I've only been back three times since then. In addition to climate, my detecting time has severely been cut because jiu jitsu takes over our family life 4 nights a week as my kids and wife found themselves addicted to the dojo and choking people.  I'm a bad influence, I guess.

Two weeks ago (my last real 6 hour detecting session) I ran into another detectorist at this park working his Ace around the same goal net I worked back in June. Soon we were chatting and then kinda hunting together as he sort of followed me around, which was slightly annoying when I'm used to being alone, but that's me, not him really.

Anyway, while we were hitting various spots around the park I picked up a small 10k ring at the edge of one playground. 4th hunt here and gold! 1.4 grams 10kt (unknown triangle mark)

We finally got more rain and I went back to this patch a few days ago. I went to one of the softball backstops the other detectorist and I hunted around a few weeks back. I was mindlessly pulling square tabs three feet from the backstop fence, trying to reduce the trash load, when to my surprise gold #2 appeared - 7.4 grams 14kt FG mens band! Boom!  1 hour 45min into the hunt.

Same tone as the older style square pull tabs and just about into bottlecap range. In fact, I dug a few square tabs that while on the surface sound and VDI the same as the ring. That's without headphones and using the module's external speaker, btw.

After 5 hunts of maybe 35 hours I am pleased with the new patch so far. Almost two dozen junk jewelry, over $25 - 30 in change and one silver ring, one silver dove pin (no picture) and two gold rings. 

Both rings taken with Deus 4.0 11" coil, full tones, 0 discrimination, 0 notch 18khz.

Got yo love those plain 14K gold bands - I am wearing one right now I found detecting, one of many. Just goes to show though that the real secret to detecting is patience and getting in the hours - now go find some more!

That 10k thing looks a bit off though.

10k can take on a rather coppery look. I found a large 10 k mens ring that was all dark and coppery looking... tossed it in the junk rings box.... then I ran across a post about that so I pulled it back out and polished it up ...... well the rest is history...LOL

It's all about the alloy in the ring.

Ya know, I question the conventional wisdom that one must hunt water or sand to find the most gold jewelry. Yes, they are commonly lost at those places, and concentrated (if you find a virgin area) but most people spend 99% of thier lives on dry land away from the beach. Whatever quantity of gold is lost and concentrated at the beach must pale in comparison to what is lost and semi-concentrated to scattered on dry turf.

Then there is competition from past and present. Beaches seem to be the place for low hanging fruit and easy harvest, but those locations are mostly about recent drops anymore. Who can get the coil over it first, or punches deepest gets the gold!

At parks, in my area at least, these shallow rings might have seen a hundred coils over them before me. They were found in high probability locations, right where they ought to be, but they were never dug.

Energy spent may be a factor for some, but consider the energy spent walking miles of beach, swinging and only occassionally digging  due to distance between signals. On turf one can hunker down in a 100' area and easily pop shallow targets left and right, expending more energy digging and less energy walking and swinging. My beach experience was more walking and less digging  while my park experience is the opposite. Maybe it's just me, but I'm not out swinging for a walk, I'm out swinging for gold to dig so I prefer to spend time digging in signal dense high probability sub-locations when I'm after it. Just like a beach, gold can be anywhere at a park but it tends to be in somewhat predictable zones where it's expected to be...only very few people seem to try. In my area that's just fine to me.

Which gives me a basic idea for a personal challenge and experiment. 24 hour gold challenge! - semi-random selection of a park by someone else with a 24 hour time limit to find gold there.

One would really have to be selective in many areas of detecting to pull it off more than a few times.
