  3. Hi Dave. Is that on grassy sites? I do find deep rings in the muddy lake bottom, in which there is nothing inhibiting the ring from going deep. Especially with people stomping on them further into the mud. I'd say the deepest of those rings in the picture was about 6" in the grassy site, with the others being just below the surface in the grass roots. I don't know if my "rings caught in grass roots" theory is correct, but I'm guessing it has some merit. I just don't know if that merit is enough to justify ignoring the deep targets 🙂
  4. ghost I'm a gold miner in Alaska that really enjoys your stories thank you again Doug
  5. It's a shame relic season is over for me, but today I managed to get a short hunt in on some property behind my house I have permission to. Someone bought it and bush hogged it recently, so I went back there to check it out. It doesn't get cleared often. It's only about an acre or so. I've found old buttons here in the past, Tombac and brass, so I went out for a while to see if I could find anything. First target was this incredible old round button, probably the oldest I've ever found. The shank appears to be integral, and somehow it doesn't seem to be two piece. I found a large piece of brass kettle about two feet down with some oyster shells, and nearby it was a complete shoe buckle. You can see the kettle bit in the trash, I didn't throw it out: Altogether I got 3 really old things, the button, the buckle, and a piece of broken metal I believe to be Pewter. The buckle is one of the few intact ones I have found and dates from 1600-1650. https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Spectacle_buckle_(FindID_590443).jpg
  6. A few final thoughts. The Journal represents freedom. It's about mining crews from different generations all after the same thing. Freedom. For these men gold gave them the freedom they wanted and needed. Free from society and all its rules and overlapping laws. The freedom to not answer to anyone but their fellow miners. Gold gave us what we needed. We weren't bound to follow. See you out in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
  7. Today
  8. I was happy staying on the old version. Until, I needed to use the M8 to hunt for small gold nuggets. The update is kind of a must for that, I think. So I've been using the update for awhile. I don't have anything in particular I'd like to see "fixed" in an update. And that is essentially all an update is to ML, a bug fix. They don't seem interested in adding features with updates. I really wish the pinpoint volume could be adjusted independently though. And a mineralization meter. Not holding my breath for anything at all though. Would not surprise me to never see another Manticore update of any kind. Just how ML rolls.. - Dave
  9. 600/12=50 rings per month 50/4=12,5 rings per week Gold is approx 20% of the rings found Average gold ring is 4,5g Average gold (in Europe) is 60% That means 540g of gold 60%, equal to 324g of pure gold; today, gold is 69€/g... So that's more than 22.000€/24.000USD That spot is a mine!
  10. I always wondered who was reading it. Notifications were usually by the same 20 or 30 people so I have no idea who they all were. Probably never will.
  11. p.s 18650 battery's & chargers are ready available through your local vape store or the zon or bay
  12. Yes, the device needs a new update to solve the problem. It reached the highest sensitivity of 30-35 without any problems, according to what the company said. The device reaches levels of sensitivity that are very low.
  13. Thank you Mike. You were one of the biggest supporters of the journal. There were some others as well. Many thanks to those people.
  14. Guys, I have been out of the game for awhile and could use some advice on accessories for the Minelab Manticore. I took advantage of the sale and have a Manticore ,M8, and Profind40 ordered. My hunting will include Woods,Beach, Diving and hopefully some older Sites. I believe that I am covered in the Digging/Scoop Department. Diving Headphone advice needed, are the Bone induction ones the way to go? What are my options? I have a lot to learn, and if there are books that may be beneficial, I would be interested. I ordered a cover for the control box. What other must haves, or handy accessories recommended? Looking forward to the arrival, and hopefully hit the ground running. Thanks much! E
  15. They pare up just fine, mine work great. Like the fact that I could still hear a rattler if one was nearby or hear my buddy if he called me.
  16. My first choice of a machine when I head out is my Tesoro.
  17. I never had any dealings with a bear until I went to Alaska but Cougars is a different story. I had a place that one stayed on it and would see others often. This guy was going to hunt on it one year and I told him to watch out for it but he blew me off. That’s until it jumped up in front of him one day. Chuck
  18. Honestly after owning the Axiom for over a year, the ONLY feature I can think of that I would like added in an update would be manual "channel" manipulation. Instead of having to do the "frequency scan" and let it go through all the "channels". In a group hunt situation you can be operating quietly then someone comes near with another machine and you get emi interference. Would be nice to be able to manually adjust a few "channels" (for lack of a better word) up or down to stay silent. Other than that, My Axiom functions very satisfactorily and I wouldnt change a thing. And that feature I mentioned isnt even an issue unless you are detecting with a group.
  19. Jim it’s good to always have a friend and carry a gun. If a bear gets after both of you remember don’t shoot the bear shoot your friend to slow him down so the bear don’t get you. Chuck
  20. That was a great decision to call the season on a great pile of gold. Hard work to say the least but everyone went home with a nice cache for the winter. Next spring it could start off again with a bang if you felt the glory hole was not yet complete. Great story. Hope there is more to come.
  21. Chuck, you're absolutely right. A black bear is much more likely to eat you after the kill. A grizzly is mostly responding to what it sees as a threat, or to defend a kill. All the historical evidence supports that, which doesn't mean grizzlies don't ever eat people. Personally, I don't go into grizzly country anymore...I'm too old to outrun the younger guys, and can't find a one-legged guy to buddy up with. Jim
  22. Got out on Sunday and collected another 4 buckets of gravel for the "100 GOLD BUCKET CHALLENGE" I entered using my Geo Highbanker. So far, there are entrants from US, New Zealand, Canada and Australia. Kind of fun too. Anyhow, here's what 8 buckets of North Saskatchewan River Gold from Alberta Canada faired so far.
