  1. I've experienced lost friendships for things unrelated to gold! 🙃 It hurts but sometimes you can't fix it.
  2. I got a 'hip stick' replacement pack from Chris last summer I think. It did not include a rod. What it included was a solid plastic ring without the nylon little strap which wore out on mine thus the need for replacement. I used my old rod that was cut for me by Chris when I was at his house one day. The new one works just fine. Before you throw your old rod away save it and you might be able to buy the new hardware which will make it better than new. You can almost make one from the 'Bigg Lugg' type of tool carry when you get the ball and the socket which fits on your belt. You still have to do some work. It would be easier to get them from JP. https://www.toolmarts.com/superior-parts-bl2-1bm-original-bigg-lugg-2-rubber-belt-hook-tool-holder-system-with-1-bungee-strap
  3. Are you buttering someone up for an invite? haha
  4. Simon, Simon, Simon ... Santa only works one day a year my lad? Come on now. You must know that at least Santa makes a list and checks it twice ALL YEAR. Then he has to get that sleigh (surfboard for you and Hawaii and those neighbors you have downunder) ready. He only Delivers one day a year. I'm hoping Norvic sold a couple of his nuggets and is posting you one of those detectors. I think the strings attached to a Norvic detector are that you have to pay him back if you like it. If you get a new detector from Santa he doesn't need to be paid back. Have a Merry Christmas and go find some nuggets. Mitchel
  5. I haven't read all of this thread or most of the others. My question is ... do I detect in areas where all of this really makes any difference? I use an 800 on a tide beach with a 15 inch coil. I dig most things. I think the 17" CTX is its equal most of the time. Will any 11" coil be worth my time? I don't think so. Mitchel
  6. Simon, Very nice of you to go out and find fresh drops and RETURN them to the locals. You will be their hero! haha
  7. A gold nugget weighing almost ten kilograms was auctioned at high prices in the USA. The so-called “Alaska Centennial Gold Nugget” brought in 750,000 dollars (around 694,000 francs) at the auction on Wednesday, as the auction house Heritage Auctions in Dallas announced on Twitter.20 hours ago
  8. Before you can do a project on BLM land you must submit a RECLAMATION PLAN. It was probably rejected! haha
  9. I'm sure many of you have trailer horror stories. Please share a few to keep the rest of us safe!
  10. We all think we are finding very little gold. Try dealing with these conditions! https://rtd.rt.com/films/diving-for-gold/#anchor_watch_video
  11. More leads to more ... do it the English way except ... too many cooks spoil the sauce. English permissions for Roman artifacts are more organized. The property owners sometimes want extra people sharing in the hunt so it can all be searched. Just so long as they don't make a complete mess of the UK farm and go back and steal I guess it works out. A group of detectorists can find an activity area and it helps everyone. THEN you tell everyone to stay out. That is always the potential end to a good permission.
  12. Simon, I agree that Minelab has not listened to those of us who have had failures over the years. They would have abandoned this coil ear design long ago if they had listened. I think it is these issues that have piled up and added up to affect the Minelab stock price you were talking about in another thread. There is just not enough profit to replace coils, shafts, leaky control units and provide the shipping also under warranty. My CTX 17" and many others like me failed a couple of years after I bought mine new when they came out. I took pictures and sent them to Minelab showing how my coil ears broke and suggested a fix without any response. I think the coil ear material is just too brittle to handle the torque pressure near the coil from the big screws. Over the months and months of it just being tight in and out of use the base just has to give. It cracks just as you describe. Shims would help but are a pain to use if you change a coil. You have to have a neutral position for the ears or even a fraction of inward pressure will crack it. Minelab should have another system but I bet this is the least expensive way. Your fixes look good. Now where are you going to use it? haha
  13. Well done. You shared a bit of the Farmer's Land history with him which will mean a great deal. If it can be put together with some 'details' with a local historian it could be that much more interesting. When I was growing up in Florida we lived on an old Timucuan Indian site. There were many artifacts found there in the 1950's and before. It was in a 'trade area' on a river and I wish we could have used a metal detector on that land before it was developed. Some of the artifacts were so 'interesting' they needed to be donated to a museum for other historians to see and understand. Now I think you could make a digital gift to the locals if you post that coin picture on a good website. Mitchel
  14. And ... Why does it not corrode easily? It is all explained by Einstein's Theory Of Relativity. https://www.livescience.com/58245-theory-of-relativity-in-real-life.html Most metals are shiny because the electrons in the atoms jump from different energy levels, or "orbitals." Some photons that hit the metal get absorbed and re-emitted, though at a longer wavelength. Most visible light, though, just gets reflected. Gold is a heavy atom, so the inner electrons are moving fast enough that the relativistic mass increase is significant, as well as the length contraction. As a result, the electrons are spinning around the nucleus in shorter paths, with more momentum. Electrons in the inner orbitals carry energy that is closer to the energy of outer electrons, and the wavelengths that get absorbed and reflected are longer. [Sinister Sparkle Gallery: 13 Mysterious & Cursed Gemstones] Longer wavelengths of light mean that some of the visible light that would usually just be reflected gets absorbed, and that light is in the blue end of the spectrum. White light is a mix of all the colors of the rainbow, but in gold's case, when light gets absorbed and re-emitted the wavelengths are usually longer. That means the mix of light waves we see tends to have less blue and violet in it. This makes gold appear yellowish in color since yellow, orange and red light is a longer wavelength than blue. Gold doesn't corrode easily The relativistic effect on gold's electrons is also one reason that the metal doesn't corrode or react with anything else easily. Gold has only one electron in its outer shell, but it still is not as reactive as calcium or lithium. Instead, the electrons in gold, being "heavier" than they should be, are all held closer to the atomic nucleus. This means that the outermost electron isn't likely to be in a place where it can react with anything at all — it's just as likely to be among its fellow electrons that are close to the nucleus.
  15. Lunk, Well done for sure. Do you still put in any time with other detectors?
  16. What portion of the Metal Detection had to do with their military contracts? Did they lose one or not get one they wanted? I do think that there is an over-saturation in some high end markets as there are a few choices now of brands and Minelab has reached many new mass market users with the Vanquish and lower priced units. You would think that there would be a Christmas bump but maybe it is the chips. The dealer network must really be taking a hit with Covid and just how difficult it is to find gold.
  17. The pool hall building was built in 1907 and it is now called Hollywood Billiards Hall but I don't think it has any pool tables any more. It is located at 1028 Market Street.
  18. Thanks Simon I'm glad to watch them stick that coil in and under the water. I have one and I've used it but not in the wet so far. I know I'll be using it at the beach sometime in the next few weeks on a low tide. I don't want to wade with it but I'll get it wet.
  19. Joe, Cold and colder makes you HOT! Your passion for the hunt is incredible. The rings keep popping. Mitchel
  20. King, You are giving away the 2 hour AFTER secret! haha I try to make it to some of my better beaches first on that schedule but sometimes it is not possible and someone beats me to it and I just go to another beach or work 'behind' the other detectorist. I don't like to jump in front of someone I don't know. Mitchel
