Redneck
How small in inches does the EQ collapse down to, with coil on?
Steve Herschbach
The Equinox collapses to 47" to fit in most detector bags. The Equinox breaks down to fit in a standard airline carry on. The longest piece is the lower rod at 24-1/4" and weight 2.96 lbs. Here are all the measurements I could think of. The Golden Mask rod could be made to work, but the first problem is Equinox handle being designed to fit an approx 22 mm outside diameter rod, whereas the Gold Mask upper rod is more like 26 mm (more or less). The upper rod is also a little shorter on the Golden Mask so probably ok for those with shorter arms. Might need to extend for longer arms. The question other than making the rod collapse shorter is whether it is worth the effort. The Equinox handle assembly by itself as shown in the top of the photo below only weighs 13.6 oz or 386 grams, and is about as light as Minelab could make it without making it weaker. I think the lower rod is spun fiberglass but it might be plastic - hard to tell without digging into it. The two uppers are aluminum and replacing them with carbon fiber I can't see as saving much. The upper rods are 22 mm outside diameter and the lower rod is 20 mm outside diameter. The lock pins as close as I can eyeball appear to be 5 mm. I think the diagram below explains the layout pretty well - ask if further questions. Click or double-click for larger views.
tsunamiscott
Great question Redneck, I have been wondering the same thing! The Equinox broke down looks like it will fit nicely into a recurve bow backpack. I use a Artemis backpack with the CTX but the shaft sticks out of the top arrow-tube hole several inches and gets caught on branches when in the woods, and catches the wind when riding on the highway. The Artemis backpack is 27" inside so the Equinox will fit nicely completely broke down. Plus, it will be so much easier to break down than the CTX. Redneck
I'm looking to keep it in one piece in my service van. With the coil tipped up then , probably about 42". I need it assembled, so I can grab it at a moments notice. ( Dispatch, put that service call on hold for a while......)
Mike Buck
Steve, Did you say in a previous post that you are able to pack yours in a standard carry on? Is that in the picture you have above? Can you provide the dimensions when its all broke down like that? I fly a lot for work. I'd like something I can travel with easy in a possible hard shelled carry on bag. How do pack yours when traveling? I have been bringing along one of my old Whites detectors and just packing it in my suitcase and padding it with clothes and praying for the best. When I get the Equinox, I'd like to try and be more cautious. Just like to see what your system is like if you have flown with it yet? Also, does the head unit detach from the upper shaft? Thanks for the help!
Toddbbq
What is the diameter and material of the upper rod. It looks plastic?

The longest piece is the lower rod at 24-1/4" and weight 2.96 lbs.” You are looking at it packed exactly how I packed it for a trip recently. That is a standard small Kirkland carry bag. Well, I packed the clothes and other travel stuff around it. I don’t do anything special when packing detectors. They usually go in checked baggage due to size and one thing I do like about Equinox is the ability to fit in a carry on. The key is that 24.25" long lower rod which in this case has to be angled corner to corner to fit in the 22" carry bag. The pod and handle/grip are a complete unit (the battery is in the handle) but can be separated from the rod if need be by removing four bolts and the base cap. Note the hole in rod where the positioning pin in the cap goes to lock the handle assembly in place

The middle and upper rods are standard painted aluminum construction, and appear to be 22 mm in outside diameter. See picture above.
