Very nice tiddlers! My first trip to OZ I was certain all the gold was an ounce or more...When Ian and I went out that first evening he found a piece about 1/4 of a gram.... I think I insulted him with my exclamation "is that it?"....That opened my eyes to reality... Fred

Any Ideas About This Huge Nugget
fredmason replied to HarbingerSong's topic in Rocks, Minerals, Gems & Geology
looks like something melted in a big fire- there have been many in S. Cal....if it is lead you can easily mark it with a knife or even fingernail...an XRF scan would reveal the truth... fred -
Detecting In Small Creeks / VLF Vs SDC Vs GPZ
fredmason replied to And's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
Perhaps your friend could loan you the GPZ to try...I doubt it is a good choice for your purpose...and that 14 inch round coil will not get you very close in big rocks... fred -
Very pretty! Nice of you to use a U.S. 50 cent piece for scale. fred

Nice gold, Lunk… do you think this was gold you missed with the Monster? just curious.... fred

Do You Remember Your Old Detectors?
fredmason replied to geof_junk's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
Yes. My first (1980) was a Garret deep-seeker vlf/tr. I never found any gold with it but lots of coins and tons of iron. I found my first and only silver dollar with it... fred -
Thanks, Patrick; you are too kind...I can drive just can't wobble very far on foot-YET! I would love to meet Jim, please keep me informed. fred

Doc's New Qweegle Bungee Cord - Make Life Easy!
fredmason replied to Doc's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
another great design, Doc...unfortunately, I have yet to wear-out the ones I bought years ago. I would not be without your bungee and Chris' Hipstik on my GPZ... thanks for being an inventor. fred -
Good on you, Paul. I love the ironstone/gold speci's...don't let those people talk you into grinding it up... fred

You can learn to use the 5000! It is a very capable detector with many coil options. I personally do not think you need more than three or four coils. As has been many times the operator is as, or more, important than the detector. If you get one, get Jonathan Porters dvd on the 5000...money well spent! fred

dang, small world, Chase. I went to 1st -5th grade at Narranca and Magnolia schools...a very long time ago. Sdminer and I must be neighbors..... fred

fredmason replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
Yeah, that happened to me down around Yuma but far from the military grounds...I just knew I had a one oz nugget but somehow it became a 50 cal bullet-maybe a tracer... I was really bummed! fred -
Chinese Opium Tins, What Do They Say?
fredmason replied to Gerry in Idaho's topic in Minelab Metal Detectors
I think they say" the state has determined that this is a cancer causing agent". fred -

Well, I thought the buttons were a cool way to show agreement or appreciation...without actually writing a response. Twenty is fine with me. fred

Gee wheez, I sure wish I had some geekiness in me....thanks Phrunt and all. fred

Phrunt; will there be a gps connection with the Navigator if there is no cell service? maps are fine but a GPS reading is often critical for marking locations, etc... fred
