Picked Out A V-nickel

Recommended Posts

Hitting the area that has been picked through by just about everyone with a detector and managed to find a v-nickel nicely hidden with a chunk of iron bar about 7" down. Got a fairly short signal in one direction and long iron signal in another, the short had a spot on nickel ID but thought it might have been a piece of aluminum. As you notice in my mix of trash there is a bunch of small aluminum. You can blame Chase for that as it forces me to look for gold $1 coins in the area :( Bunch of memorial nickels were in one hole with a penny about 4" away from a can on the surface. The brass bits look like its from a hurricane lamp? Found a few of those in the area.

Anyways the Gold Racer does really well in trashy areas and surprisingly has descent depth for such a small coil. Finding that I needed to drop the iSat down to 3 from default 6 as the ground didn't vary too much and the gb would drift too much. Ground averaged 40's-mid 60's which is mild for most the area.

Nice find. In rough shape. Show a picture if it cleans up better. Try soaking in hydrogen peroxide.

I have had good luck with steel wool or fine wire brush on nickels but usually the nickels and coppers get blown away here because of all the fertilizer in the ground. Old coins I try to make out a date then bag them.

Congratulation of unmasking a keeper-coin.  'V' and Shield  Nickers are some of my favorite finds in old-use locations, but it can be a challenge to find the better, uncontaminated places where they can come out relatively clean.  Fertilize and other chemical issues in many sites can really mess up the nickel, especially due to their alloy make-up.

Glad you got out, and 'Thank You' for including the detector model and settings info.

Guys

Using something abrasive on a coin is not the thing you want to do. Just digging a coin up and running it on your pants to see the date is a no no but we all do it.

I have yet have a V nickel are shields nickel  come out of the ground without some kind of erosion that never came off .
Sometimes it’s best to admire the beauty of the coin the way it is .
