Got A Little Bit Of Everything Today

Recommended Posts

Well the weather sure changed! Two days ago it was almost 80 here, this morning started out at 40 and only made it to 50. Looks like Fall has finally settled in.20221114_091125.thumb.jpg.54921508f4b771c2ed069ca2f6c1a9df.jpg

Went to the big field today, had to wear heavier gloves for a while due to Reynaud's and a pretty stiff wind. Today I used the Deus 2 with a centering device on the 11" coil, it made it much more comfortable to use.20221112_191548.thumb.jpg.094b669bc63df258f22fa300e786a6f0.jpg

In the first 30 minutes I got a faint 81/82, as I dug deeper it got better and better and settled in at 91 at about 10" down, and out came this Civil War Cavalry Bridle rosette, a total shocker for this field which dates back to the 1700s.20221114_191335.thumb.jpg.b2588e075bd0ea2f62dae99485191bdc.jpg

It had a back plate or tabs, but all that is gone now. Probably popped off.20221114_191100.thumb.jpg.eed62043633bf02f76339617c3ca3f57.jpg

Didn't get anything else but buckshot and bits of metal for quite a while so I changed spots, and stuff started coming up.20221114_191221.thumb.jpg.569595d4304e0c48b0141dfa28ed16f7.jpg

Got quite a few buttons, the most interesting being the small jeweled button with a green stone:20221114_191526.thumb.jpg.22f6288fa8715c741fcc62bba55db72d.jpg20221114_191556.thumb.jpg.d3bb27fbd60f918311d1410fb15fbe8d.jpg

The stone is faceted but is probably glass or paste, it is heavily scratched. The lobed one may not be a button.

Two of the above buttons have a basket weave pattern, are thin two piece, and say something about "superfine", but neither has any gilt left. I've found one or two of these here before.20221114_190744.thumb.jpg.26e3717f9e9c0a494a46608fe4e62601.jpg

The next two were a surprise, although I'm on a streak of finding gold plated buttons with a lot of plating still there.20221114_190654.thumb.jpg.5b2574e07a2c4765ca0400911dcef311.jpg

One has a shank, the other does not. They both say "Scovill Superfine" on the back, and have an identical pattern on them. They are cast.

And finally, my possibly second best find of the day due to the rosette:20221114_190609.thumb.jpg.abb3238e0e6809ba31c9967fbc5f2b50.jpg20221114_190634.thumb.jpg.f120c8e2b5e6e6bfb48b1969054a870c.jpg

An 1857 Seated half dime, the second one I have found here. It was way out in the back.20221114_135354.thumb.jpg.17fea7e834723e1c6b778f2874be4df1.jpg

All this pretty much validates my thought that horse racing or some kind of exhibitions took place here. There is a spot in the front field where we have found many old buttons, and a place in the back where spectators or groups of people attended.

Trash was pretty heavy today, a lot of lead 😀20221114_162709.thumb.jpg.2274995b94584133c14fbc81445a1ed9.jpg

I will have to speak to the owner, what I thought was just random grass may be winter wheat. 😵 Might not be able to come back for a while.

Dang, those are some more great finds! What an awesome location and congrats on so many cool saves, but the rosette, gilded buttons, and seated half dime are my faves. Well done!

So did the centering device on the 11" coil help any with the arm fatigue?

Very nice hunt with several nice items.

Glad you are doing well with the Deus 2, but don't forget about the Nox as she will get mad at you.

Good luck on your next hunt and stay safe.

Thanks Cap'n! Of late I seen to be "bringing home the bacon", I think you, NCtoad, strick, Glenn in CO, and a few others (sorry if I didn't mention you) are showing that the Deus 2 will definitely "Find More Stuff™". 🤣

I wonder if it has magicks, or if it just gives you a renewed interest and concentration in looking, and has a bit superior control capability than its ilk. 😁 Suffice to say I think I'll keep it. 🤔

On to the centering device: When I first swung the detector indoors after installing it, I think I heard The Platters sing "My Prayer". 🤣 I knew it was going to be an improvement, and it was, my arm didn't ache after a couple hours, and it seemed more balanced. It also didn't fall over. I think it does go a little deeper than the 9", and some of my first impressions of it may have been erroneous.

Here's a link for the one I bought, it's a bit crude according to a friend that also prints, but it's a fair price and seems solid, for sure the ears are really thick.

I would recommend it. 👍

Nice job 👍  Like the rosette, and how can you go wrong with seated half dime!!!

Thanks! Used your lemon juice method again on the gold buttons.

Odd that this year more Civil War relics are turning up. 🤔 Maybe I'm just getting better at being in the right place. 😀

This area is not famous for anything Civil War, they merely provided recruits and militia to the Confederate effort and were a breadbasket of sorts. Being a peninsula it is fairly defendable, but more important seems to be the passivity of the residents in each incident on our soil. It was raided in Revolutionary times and the War of 1812. Heck even John Wilkes Booth hid out in the town one of my beaches is in, where he was cornered and shot. 😀colonial-beach-john-wilkes-booth-site.jpg.03642119f3fef6045765310b708e81b5.jpg

There's a ton of history here, a few Presidents and big names. It hasn't changed much, so there's stuff to be found.

Second half dime I've found here, holed but whole. 😀 Too bad the soil is not kind to them.

Outstanding finds👍, hopefully you can come back sooner rather than later to hunt that area again.

Thanks Glenn, I was a bit reluctant to post after seeing your excellent finds with the D2. 😵 I think we're all finding it to be a contender in the SMF world, it just took a while for us to settle into its capabilities.

I'm going to have to bring the owner a relic box of select stuff I found here, and find out what the restrictions are. Never assume you can just go back to a farm. 🤔

Hey VL,

Thanks for the compliment and reminder. 👍

I've been meaning to get out more with the D2 this season because I still have a lot to learn. I also have an old Tesoro Vaquero that needs attention, I'm waiting for the field in front of my house to be cleared. No worries, the Equinox will be out there. 😀
