Yes, IR is a very useful feature. Without it, all metals would sound the same.

The problem I was having was with the loudness. Nonferrous was like a quiet little mouse compared to ferrous. The funny thing is I just tried it again and the problem seems to have corrected itself. Now nonferrous is coming through loud and clear. Hopefully the problem is solved.
