15" 3.0

Earlier in the week I asked a question about using the 15" coil after updating to 3.0.  I went out just a couple of hours after that on a early morning hunt and surprised myself with the stability.

Normally I would put my finds under looking for jewelry but this was more about the coil and software than working the beach in my estimation.  I think the Equinox is more stable in multi with the 11" coil after the update.  Now I think it has done wonders for my 15" coil stability.  The beaches haven't had a big wave event this week so I couldn't find patches at my beaches like I can sometimes.  The large coil test would give me more coverage.

This first picture was of the best items I found.  In addition I found a couple of metal toy cars.

The first target I found was the twisted earring.  It comes in at a negative number.  A bit later I found the stainless steel piece whatever it is.  And then I went in to the calf to knee waves and got a signal and I blindly scooped and then I could see the glimmer of a ring.  It surprised me but I knew it was a fake.  Later as I was getting ready to leave a guy came up to me and wanted me to help him find his keys.  A set of 4 keys should not be too hard to find but he didn't have a good idea where he lost them.  We searched in the dry sand (now I was in Park 1) for over 30 minutes.  During that time I found the cars and the chain.  It is not magnetic but it was a scratchy near 0 read on the Nox, more towards negative.  That was a real surprise.

The next hunt produced a couple of rings and some 'smalls' for the 15".  Once again the beaches needed to be worked slowly and the big coil found the stone ring when it read 18.  The little thin ring is the first ring I have found that said 1! (Every other target that is a 1 has been foil.)  The little charm and the chain dangle were tiny targets, the micro jewelry kind.  I was impressed for the 15".  The wire hoop was a 10 and I was hoping it was good but alas just junk and then the 1971 Kennedy.  I haven't found many of them and that was the year I graduated high school.IMG_8776.thumb.JPG.7521129972c62e0406cf1cccae2cadac.JPGIMG_8777.thumb.JPG.0ed4ed2eff1e71b55c934dd984601db7.JPGIMG_8778.thumb.JPG.b3a899aa67408d3c718084897564e513.JPG

This afternoon I went out in the hot sun and couldn't stay long on the beach because of so many people.  I worked my way into the dry sand that I have worked before with my CTX.  I can't work it with the Equinox because there is an EMI there I just have to avoid.  Today I was in Park 1 when I walked into that zone and didn't have to change anything.  As a matter of fact I could cycle through the frequencies and there was no EMI problem anywhere.  It got a little ratty later because there is a road with underground cables nearby but I could even hear the targets over that noise.  Mostly pennies were left and they were not even wheats.  One target had me digging deep.  The sun was hot and I wanted to stop and I wanted to see it also.  I persisted and at over 20" I scooped out of the bottom of the hole a folded piece of aluminum packaging.  It wasn't an aluminum can (I think I would have given up on it) but it is one of the deepest targets I've ever dug with the Equinox.  I was very glad it was not in wet sand.

I like the 15" coil much better now.  It gets caught in the waves but it stays stable.  Now I need to use the 6" with the new version looking for nuggets.

Great write up Mitchel.  I have been out a few short hunts with the 15 testing 4k.  I have found similar stability you describe.  I can't say I have ever found a guitar part in all my hunts...  that tuning gear is fun!  I wonder where the rest of the guitar went ;).  Tim

Good report, Mitchel.  I'm impressed that the 15" can find those very small pieces.

Concerning the Kennedy Half (also my HS graduation year, BTW), do you think it's a recent drop?  I almost never see Kennedy Halves in circulation any more, and it's been that way for at least 3 decades.  But the condition doesn't look like it's seen much of the saltwater.  Or was this in a high-and-dry part of the beach?  The condition indicates it's not a souvenir/memento that someone carried in pocket or purse for a long time (meaning many years) since that would have caused more wear.  Have you thought about how long it's been where you found it?

I hunt the 15" 95% of the time.  With practice it does an extremely good job separating for its size.

I've been kicking around the idea of adding the 15 to my toolkit.  This is very good feedback in that regard Mitchel.  I appreciate it.

How nose  heavy it the Nox with 15 inch on it and do you and others use a shoulder strap when detecting with it?

Great job as usual Mitchel,

I'm way north of you and use the 15" almost all summer long on the beach. I switch back and forth with the 11" to keep myself honest. Wintertime my beach gets much more mineralization and the 15 just wears me out with all the signals. When I switch back to the 11" I feel naked without the 15!  I have a small patch of beach (100'x100') that has produced gold. I pound it relentlessly with the 11 and continue to find little bits. I come back with the 15 and pound it again and find even more little bits and deep coins the 11 misses. It's a great tool to have in the Arsenal. I do use a counter weight with the 15.

On a place where  British torries  were  said to have hid I found a electric  guitar inside it's protective case. This  was a very  steep hill with a  narrow top.I thought I has a  treasure chest at first .The case could  not protect it from the  elements as it had damage to it.The  kid   who buried it even wrote a note inside the case warning to  stay   off this hill or they would get a musket  ball to the head.He must have read about the history of this place. You never know what you will find.

The 15 does go deeper.  I also noticed last night in the chain hunt that the 'fringe detecting' goes outside the coil 5-6 inches on large cans or things so I do get drawn in to a target that way also.

This is actually a continuation of thread of this one but I'm not in training mode any more!  haha

I wondered what you had been doing rather than getting those big nuggets!

  • 2 weeks later...

A terrific write up,i bought a 15'' coil but just found it not a pleasant experience using it due to the weight on my right wrist,so it had too go.Have been using the 6'' coil mainly during the stubble time after harvest. But the 11'' coil could well be going back on the detector.

Currently running the latest version software although not seen a great amount of improvement yet,but as i use it more then that could well have been a good move.

The Equinox although have had it for over 12-14 months i am basically having a love/hate relationship with it,wont part with it as some of my permissions require multi freq but its not the main everyday use detector as i had originally thought it would become.
