  1. Wow I can't believe I got out yesterday to dig. It seems like work and the stress of things in 2020 took a toll on my detecting experiences for quite a while. I wanted a new coil for the MK and saw a post Kac made about the Nel Superfly, So I said what the heck I'll give it a try. This coil is 6 grams lighter than my 9 inch. I must say this coil is amazing!!! great depth and way better separation. So I went to give it a spin on a site I hunt that has some modern and 18th century history to it. (ball fields and farm fields). I swung for about 5 hours in the 35 degree weather, and found a bunch of coins,(1941 penny, 46 nickle) shot shells, suspender clip, fishing reel, and a fragmented old bell. I wish the bell was whole, because it was about 2'' in dia. The reel perplexes me because of the lack of water in the middle of a 20 acre field. Overall I had a really nice trip out, I was starting to forget how detecting can clear your mind. PS Joe D can you please send some of the Florida warmth up here to PA.
  2. Great job on the finds!! My holy grail is a trime, I just can't seem to trip over one yet. As for other things to try, they are the clothes line areas. Look for rope scars on the tree's or if you find oddly placed iron pipe in the ground try and find another and hunt all around.
  3. welcome to the DP adventure, I would suggest a nokta simplex+ it's about 2.9 pounds, or minelab vanquish 340 2.6 pounds. Glad your here Good Luck
  4. I think your going to be more than happy with the simplex, My buddies first find with it was a Spanish reale !!! They are really great machines. I wish you luck and welcome to the forum.
  5. The bag looks good, But I like the leg holster for the pin pointer. Anyone have a clue what they cost?
  6. That looks like a fair idea, I'm going to give that a run when my ground dry's out or decides to thaw a little. Seems to be a good cherry picking weapon for new park hunts.
  7. Welcome to the club Chase!!!, It sure is a wonderful coin and in great shape. I hope you can dig a few more goodies before the year ends. Great job!!!
  8. Cpt, It takes a lot of practice to become very proficient at popping coins with a probe. Take your time. I have only two places that require probe like instruments. I pretty much gave up on those parks after getting a $100 fine for detecting on one of those places, They said I was destroying park property. After a 20 minute argument and showing the police the park rules they still fined me. ANY park with those rules basically mean don't detect here. Just be careful of the fine print in the park rules stating you can not disturb or destroy park flora. That by the way includes grass = $100 fine.
  9. Good job, finding something good usually happens when you least expect it. sometimes when you surrender to defeat, you relax and focus more on the right areas to cover.
  10. Mountain lion, The other white meat. Or is that pork ? Having a dog in cougar country is a good choice, 9 times out of ten they will leave in a hurry. My Dogo Argentino and my Pit are great companions for the remote locations with the hungry predators. My Dogo Miedo just loves a good pork chop!!
  11. I'm happy with 15 a year, You must be hunting where the rich folks lived. Good job
  12. And that's what I thought, Sounds like NM wants to focus on non detector based business. This (sister company) will draw needed monies from the detector R&D end to finance the new endeavor. This could ? be bad for future detector development. When sister companies start up they generally pull resources and cash from the existing company. Sometimes this leaves the original company flat. Especially when housed in the same building. I really don't blame them for jumping into the billion dollar covid product market. (way late) by the way. If they do well in an already crowded market, it could? and would inject money back into NM. But that could take years. Non contact thermo units are extremely inaccurate and false many times a day and 200 companies already have the jump on this market. The most accurate thermo is in the butt !!! And as for the 119,000 sq ft building, seems a little small for two mfg. companies. This to me, just smells like a way to hide the fact that new detectors will hold second place to the new start up company. Not sure why they would even post this info? I would just rather guess what they are up to. Sorry for the rant, but I really want to see some good come to market from NM.
  13. Turns out it's going to cost me $1150.00 to turn this ring into a necklace!! Hind site Maybe I should have left it buried in the sand for a single man to find. Not sure how a valuable item such as this ends up costing me? Oh well my wife puts up with a lot of the grouchy old man in me, and deserves at least that. Love you K !!! PS (do not take your spouse detecting while finding something awesome!!!!) Ha Ha Ha
  14. Tom, Yup, just like Gary found a 19th century railroad spike and called it a 17th century ship nail. 15th to 19th century humans were smart. No one would dig 250 ft to hide a treasure below the water line of an island.
  15. Great finds, But you need to dig a few hundred test pit's and get Gary Drayton on your team Ha Ha
  16. Found this very cool old Strawbridges & Clothier charge coin hunting around an old spring house. Anyone have a clue when it was made? I'm thinking these are pretty rare.
  17. The beach was in Virginia, an extended weekend getaway. I'm pretty sure this was all just dumb luck, and walking over the correct spot. But you have to hunt to find for sure. That was the first beach hunt with the MK and 7x11 coil. It really ran quite well in beach mode and 3 tone.
  18. I'm pretty much a blind squirrel when it comes to the beach hunting thing. This trip totaled about 6 hours over the course of 3 days. Thanks to all you beach members, I've managed to pick up on a few things. I was in the dig it all mode, being not that confident in my sand skills. Did I mention that I hate bottle caps? They sound even better in the sand!!! I was mostly hunting the wet/dry edge and was just enjoying the early morning sunrise. This day I was on a tear of sinkers and caps. Still having fun being away from work though. At 9:00 am my wife came down and joined me for a before breakfast walk. She asked if I found anything good and answered with the usual, Nope just crap. We walked another 20 feet and I got a really nice strong soft tone. Thinking sinker, I started to dig with my homemade plastic scoop. Let me just say DO NOT have your wife with you when you find something really good, It never works out in your favor. In my scoop was a wonderful diamond ring (wasn't to sure at the time) After I rinsed it off a little and felt the weight I knew I had something good. Oh yes she promptly removed it from my death grip!!! After getting home from our trip I took it to a jeweler friend, who offered me $5500 for the diamonds, said I could keep the platinum. Turns out it was a vvs1 1.2 carrat main stone and 8 very nice 2mm stones. Lucky for me my wife said she would keep it (god help me) I haven't seen it since.
  19. Great find Steve!!!! History comes in many forms. Love the photo's
  20. Welcome Bryon, Lurk no more, glad to have you come aboard.
  21. Welcome Larry, Glad you found us. Post some of those finds.
  22. I'll be in Cape Charles Virginia on this friday till monday. Any detector shops close to that area?
  23. Thanks for all the help everyone, I haven't completely given up on the MK, just the larger coil combo. The MK with the 9'' concentric , kicks ass but depth is limited. But I do now see the light of having more than 2 detectors for conditions. As for the tones GB, I mean sound. The minelab sound is a little too flute like and kinda washy. The ORX and the Deus have a sound that I can interpret much better. I think the ML tone problem came from watching Gary Drayton swinging on Oak Island. Ha Ha. Seriously, I think I have become attached to the Tesoro like sounds and have a hard time liking the ML sounds. Not to say over time I couldn't learn the sounds. My method of detecting is cleaning most all shallow targets and then go back with a bigger coil and picking the rest. Most times this works quite well for me. I need a machine that can get decent depth for my way of hunting. I fully understand that ground conditions play a big part, but I do encounter some crazy conditions that will numb your brain from the coal/slag. These are the places that have the most to be found. Most people give up on these places, where I don't. I think we all have made ill informed decisisions on detectors. So thats why I'm using your knowledge to help me make a good decision, without spending big money and making a bad choice. There is no perfect machine yet, But I have at least narrowed it to 3. I need to get my hands on each to see whats best for me.
  24. Thanks Steve, I'm thinking that taking a road trip to have a hands on experience is the way to go. Buying site unseen so to speak is a bad idea for me. I'm a pretty simple kind of guy when it comes to things. I like easy to use, easy to repair and access parts and coils. Warranties are great but always favor the mfg. and sometimes don't always work out so smoothly. The Nox 800 has a lot of great features but do you really need simo-multi frequencies? or would a single pick multi machine be just as good? I'm not a gold guy and I hunt mostly old farm sites for coins and relics. Iron separation and volume is something I must have, and I encounter coal/hot rock infested areas that I need to somewhat control. A water resistant machine is also a plus, as I do not go swimming for finds. But I do not want rain to toast a $1000+ machine. And yes (sorry to jump off the 800) I have considered the ORX and the Deus. The audio is something that sounds a little more understandable to me. Also coil selection and parts and accessories seems to be much larger than the 800? I'm trying to not confuse myself or my fellow detectors, but just want to make a sound decission based on how and where I hunt. I DEEPLY value everyones opinion on the hobby and will base my choices on thoughts you all have. Chase I value your opinions greatly and if you have any thoughts on the ORX or Deus I would love to hear your opinion, Remember I just do not need 5 detectors to squeak out I more coin. I love this hobby for what it is (fun being outside and finding something that makes your heart jump and that includes the stuff that most people would find disappointing.
  25. How about parting out the safari to make a few more dollars to add to your fund. With the extra money plus your $500 you could get something new. Just a thought. I'm kinda in the same boat but for a different reason. I wish you well with your choice.
