Crazy Stuff And A First! (update)

Recommended Posts

Virginia was blessed with a beautiful day after Christmas, it got up to 62 today, no wind, and sunny. So far I'm loving this winter, we seem to be getting a lot of great days to go metal detecting.

Today I slapped the 11" coil on the Equinox, I knew I was gonna have a lot of ground to cover. 20211226_104106.thumb.jpg.15ba590f818dfc9e054b1d10f9599b35.jpg

This spot is huge, about 300 acres. The above shot is about halfway up the field, there is much more behind me. It's all a part of this old farm dating back to the late 1600s or so. There's a cell tower way back there that was tossing EMI out into the field but noise cancel, reduced sensitivity and ground balance saved the day.

I hunted this field for about 2 hours, dug a ton of buck balls and shotgun shells and old cans, there really isn't much way out back. All the way back I finally got a good signal and popped a 1920 wheat penny. I headed back, trying all the tricks of reading the land, checking rises and areas where there would be shade in the hotter parts of the day. I started heading back to my truck for some coffee, and looked under a "signal tree" where I've found great coins in other fields. I wasn't disappointed:20211226_184744.thumb.jpg.03b80c9ed90a2b5229e004aae9dfeca5.jpg20211226_184803.thumb.jpg.cdf200c7734a87cb933b37a1b4b58e9e.jpg

I got a nice 26-28 and dug this beauty, a first for me! 1876 seated liberty dime. It was kinda mangled from the get go, but still looks ok, it was about 4" down. I never expected to find silver here as I have heard this place was hit by others. Apparently not in this area.

Found some old roads and followed them a bit, on the second one I dug the dog tag and the token:20211226_185749.thumb.jpg.9cd13bd8fa30cc907340227bdd351b89.jpg

The dog tag has a member of the landowners' family name on it, so he may be glad when I make up a gift case for him after I've cleaned out the place 😀

The token is cool, 1890s to about 1930s ad for a laxative!20211226_185559.thumb.jpg.db90e4cba9d7adc660e4310f63f1287f.jpg20211226_185611.thumb.jpg.1cd169095dffed102a8c1849add03ea8.jpg

I also dug the undated clad dime and the 1976 memorial on that road. It went to a really nice pond.

got the old button and the ox knob on the way out, so scouting showed me where the colonial stuff will be. The button has backmarks of the typical "gilt" variety. What a day.

Great hunt. Now you have a couple of areas that had old finds in them.

I'm hoping "have" is more the word! 😀

This place is so big it would take me a long time to cover it. I haven't touched the field next to the house, at least another 100 acres. The house was built in the early 1700s. The family came out skeet shooting today, thought it best not to get in the way 😎

Congrats on the seated!   You have a beautiful place to hunt!   Looks like it’s secluded and away from traffic noise.

Thanks! A first for me.

Seated, standing and walking. I don't have a standing liberty yet, or a Barber other than the "V" nickel.

I'm thinking of offering something for anyone that can tell me why Liberty went through those 3 phases from standing to walking 🤔 🤣

I'm about 3/4 of a mile from the highway that runs through here, it's kinda quiet anyway. I jumped once when they started shooting, but after I figured out which direction they were shooting it was cool.

I would wander everywhere until I found old stuff. Then pound all those areas hard. The answer to your question on why lady Liberty evolved is simple. Metal detecting was born and lady Liberty is trying to get away from all you hole digging varmints. She was just fine sitting until someone dug up her sister and put her in a pouch. 😄

Great place to hunt. 62 there? Had to shovel my driveway so I could get out to dig 😞

Very nice seated.

It won't last, tomorrow will be a seasonable 48. 😵 It'll be 55 Tuesday, so out I go again. Whacko weather this, all El Niña's fault, but I'll take it. 😀 I really want another KG3!

Great finds for the hard hunting that you have done.

The pond looks rather new (50-60 years old, I think I would be checking along the creeks that supply it.

During the Civil War troops would camp near creeks for fresh water.

Should the lake be much older then look for an old camp site area for the best finds

I will send you some more warm weather so you can check it out better.

Good luck on your next outing in a couple of days..
