On This Day In 1869 The Welcome Stranger Nugget Was Found
fredmason replied to mn90403's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
I have to give Kudos to all the exceptional Aussies that have offered to meet up with Mitchel when he goes Down Under... However, you better be prepared, I expect him to find his third Find of a Lifetime! fred -
Excellent day with the Boy...great memories for you both and gold to boot! It is good to see you post, Jonathan! happy days fred

nice find... I found a English sovereign while detecting in Phoenix way back when...I could never decide if it was my first and only gold coin or coin jewelry because some one had made a pin from it...must have been a loyalist-they put the Queen out. fred

Chris Gholson Detects Arizona
fredmason replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
Maybe he has arthritis or sells all his 7000's or he wanted to play with the 5000...lots of possible reasons...even Adam's. fred -
The Old Rock Roadhouse
fredmason replied to alaskaseeker's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
Yes, coins are great to find...you know by the date that someone was there...depending on condition from the date on the coin or possibly much later... the 50 cent piece I found at Moore Creek was almost uncirculated... fred -
I imagine Mexico is a wonderful place. I read a book by Victor Villasenor titled Rain of Gold...great story. Any way, he used to offer trips to the interior where the story was based,,,but, I never went. I think if I knew some one, spoke the language and did not mind the occasional Bite, I would go. But, I don't so I will stay where I am comfortable and understand the system ( I think). fred

Prospecting Suggestions Please?
fredmason replied to Swampstomper Al's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
If the gold is beyond two or three feet a metal detector will not help much-if at all. You certainly do not need a GPZ to find surface gold nuggets...a vlf or Pi will do. A gold pan and a shovel is your least costly survey tool... Over thinking will only take you in circles... fred -

Short Effective Beach Hunt ( Gold And Silver )
fredmason replied to mn90403's topic in Minelab Equinox Forum
You are doing very well, Mitchel. The more you do it the better you get- so, luck is important but no longer the whole story! fred -

How To Tell The Difference Between Gold Rings And Trash???
fredmason replied to Bhogg's topic in Minelab Equinox Forum
Well, in 40 years and many detectors I have NOT found the secret...gold can appear at any lower level...and be discriminated out easier then not. fred -
Docsdetecting.com Launches New Website
fredmason replied to Doc's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
WELL...nice site, Doc fred -
I get better and better but not BEST.... I almost always have a camera for special shots. However, I prefer to store my memories in my little brain...no special equipment required. I have considered a go-pro but that creates a new world of stuff and trouble... You let me know when you're coming and we can go to the beach...Mitchel is closer and he really seems to know beach hunting... fred

Paul...forget the camera and enjoy the memory making moments. Too much trouble to film and enjoy the trip, in my less than humble opinion! fred

Getting stiffed is rough...you could be a drywall hanger-the check is always in the mail...haha Why would you use so many names? Multi-personas perhaps? fred -
Definitely send it to minelab, but, before you do so... change power cords and check all connectors..this sounds like the worst kind of issue----intermittent! fred

Earclip Headphone Advice
fredmason replied to goldrat's topic in Metal Detector Advice & Comparisons
Sony MDR-J10 been using them for all types of detecting for years and years....with a 1/4 adaptor they work fine and on the 1/8 female plug the go direct... I buy them on Amazon because the new models have a closed-loop rather than open, as in the first pic... fred -

When Does New GPZ Gold Metal Detector Come Out?
fredmason replied to longhn's topic in Minelab Metal Detectors
Worrying about buying because there may be a newer model is not sane...there will always be a newer model at some point; no one can predict the time. Kind of like not buying a television because there may be a new model... Steve swore a "sacred oath" that he has no knowledge of a newer model...do you want blood too? (Just teasing, Steve) Any PI will find detectable gold, it is the operator and the location that matters...I suggest you buy a used Minelab Pi and get some experience, then you can decide if you want to get into the deep water. fred -
GPX 5000 Using " Bogene's Settings "
fredmason replied to BigSkyGuy's topic in Minelab Metal Detectors
I would use a large DD and Cancel mode...but, if you want iron-discriminate, probably not an option. D never worked very well anyway... I never used the A. I. coils, so no opinion on that. good luck fred
