  1. Largest Gold Find in Idaho for 2020, you tell me. As some of you who have been on DP for quite a many years, you know one of my focuses of chasing gold is in tailing piles. My biggest finds have all been in tailing piles and I feel most folks just don’t have the patience to get skunked for hours and sometimes days or weeks. But the rewards can be very gratifying for those who are dedicated and don’t mind a few “0” nugget days. Well since I’ve been training customers for 25 yrs, I see some of them actually taking that next step. Hats off to them as I know how hard they truly hunt. This particular customer is most certainly there at the Advance Level. He has found some amazing pieces of gold in years past with every gold detector he purchased from me. But to pull off this one only took his 3rd trip out with a 3 week old Equinox 800. Total weight of this beauty is over a pound coming in at 14.68 ounce troy. Specific gravity shows right at 3.6 ounces of heavy thick creamy rich yellow metal. I swear this year has been fantastic for my customers and I can’t even hardly keep up with their finds. If anyone has seen a bigger piece of gold come from Idaho this year with a detector please let us know. Heck, I’d just as soon be happy with anyone showing us some Idaho gold. So my question to everyone is this: Would you rather find a bunch of smaller nuggets or a single big rock “Idaho Golden Delicious”. Do you feel this piece is worthy of a museum and how would one go about getting it into an Idaho museum without outright donating it? Has anyone been through the process?

  2. I have been trying hard through many very detailed posts to explain that there is not a yes and no answer to this question. Does the Impulse AQ have excellent ferrous see through ability? Yes. Does it cut through all ferrous like butter and see just the gold? No. The nail demos are just that. Cool demonstrations, using new nails. The issue is not new nails, but largish, deeply corroded ferrous objects, rusted flat round objects, especially with holes, hair pins, and bottle caps. Does the Impulse AQ do an excellent job of seeing through most ferrous? Yes. Are there many items that will cause the ring signal to degrade to the point you might pass it up? Yes. Are there many ferrous items that will fake you out and have you digging them thinking it might be a ring? Yes. I think the Impulse AQ is the best pulse induction detector made to date for water hunting, with superb depth, and more discrimination and audio tricks that can be employed to advantage for finding rings than ever before in a PI detector. But nobody should get the idea they are going to get one and go punch though piles of ferrous stuff like it does not exist, getting the rings and missing none. The only way to do that is go all metal and dig everything. Nobody should think they are going to dig only non-ferrous items. I have gone to more effort to present a realistic assessment of what this detector is capable of than any detector I have ever reviewed. Either people are not seeing my posts, or the desire to believe the Impulse AQ is something other than a very capable PI is overwhelming and cannot be overcome no matter how much or what I post. 3. I like that.."Future AQ Owner" I'm close, I got a new cable ..a 90 degree so it's not sticking as far out of the back. Then today I got my 18650 Samsung batteries in...with a charger ...a BMS , 4 lead flat cable and some other things. Got tubing coming Thursday for both battery setups...So I'll have a Lipo setup that did not make the cut.........☠️........then the two I am working now ..one with 4 inline 26650 batteries, then a 18650 setup with 8 batteries..one will be 5000mAh, the other 7200mAh.. the only change so far in plans I was going to use PVC or CPVC pipe but found some clear tubing... the first ones I make I want to watch them close and make sure all goes as planned. Also I got M-12 8 pin fittings so the HP setup is a lot stronger.. I want to make the 8 cell 18650 setup to where I can seal it and just plug in the charger, then the 26650 battery setup to where I can remove the batteries and put 4 more in and put the discharged on charge. It's been slow but all is coming together. I will post pictures maybe this weekend to show the progress...then once done a full report ..on how to.

  5. As soon as I get a chance I will post my results here. My beaches are a 2 hour drive and most of them turn a blind eye to detecting before opening at 8 or 9 AM. They are starting to restrict detecting during operating hours. So that means getting up at 3 AM, driving 2 hours and detecting for 3 hours max and then home. So I'm debating if I want to do that. Now if someone wants to buy me a beach house down there, then I will definitely post for everyone 😄 But seriously, I will try and get a hunt in soon, as well as trying a land hunt for low conductors just for kicks. Disclaimer: I have zero hours on the AQ, so don't expect too much...I'm figuring 30 or so gold rings would be acceptable on a first hunt 😉

  6. I was not real interested in the Disc side of the AQ (Just deep) but I did do a few test with crab pot pieces and the PVC pipe. I wanted to see the AQ would do in something I might encounter. I put one crab pot pieces down..around the PVC pipe..1 inch long. I tested before I put the ring in place and the AQ muted out. As I put the ring in place on the surface, I got a nice hit from the gold ring..as it went down the tube it hit the ring at two inch's but 3 inch's was fading....the odd is ...the crab pot piece muted when by itself but once the ring went from three inch's to four I got more pointed signal from the ring?.......Like it came to life with clipped signal. At 7 inch's that signal changed and at 17 when the ring was starting to fade I got a change in the audio of the crab pot piece like it was going to mute or was it muting already? ..So the ring does have a affect on...I just wish I had went deeper on the ring now that I seen the video...if it would have muted once the ring was out of range that would have told me it was getting the ring the whole time.... I think it will be something all of us will need to test, for my conditions are different then all others.

  8. I am digging just about every thing I can hear in all metal, in the water with my Equinox. When I finally get the AQ I will be doing the same thing but checking it’s many different scenarios. This little open gold ring was found in the water along with the tons of bottle caps that I dug at a small saltwater beach. Apparently other hunters are deterred by the trash. Do I say a few special words every time I dig a bottle cap. Yup. 😆

  9. I think if you really want to find gold, in your situation you’d be better off with a gold pan. Use the right tool for the job, and this is one job where a gold pan is the better tool. With a huge amount of effort with a metal detector you may find some gold. In most small gold locations however you will come away empty handed. If there is gold that can be found at all, a properly used gold pan will find it, and at far lower cost. In a lot of ways a gold pan is a more serious prospecting tool than a metal detector, revealing gold in multitudes of locations where metal detectors would say there is no gold at all.

  10. Hello Hello. For tiny gold in a stream I would start with a shovel and a pan. Then if you are finding some pieces that are in that 3 mm size range you could whip out your detector. The Equinox 800 might be a better option if you are also going to look for coins, relics, etc. And the whole unit is waterproof for your stream work. The smaller coil as an extra option would also be good for streams. The Equinox will find gold pretty much as small as the Monster will. The claim that a Gold Monster will find a 4mm piece of gold at 15cm - I think the dealer is telling some stories there.

  12. I was suggesting one of the Joe OBN's video to someone here on the forum days ago and now, even better there's an entire chapter on those mens who wrote the history of jewelry hunting...I'm fascinated to found today traces, names and environment clues from the past. In a way or another, things done like that many years ago are still applicable and for sure the rarest thing is to find someone who can share his knowledge and techniques without to hide little secrets. I do this thing since 2005 and found nothing relevant but trash for the next three years after. When I was in need of a slap on my face to wake up brain and start doing the right things I found Jim Brower, Gary Drayton and recently Clive Clynick books to be really helpful. Those guys are currently on the field, not writing so much...Just like I do when God open the water doors.. Believe it or not, the magic wand is however working part time. I found all theories to be revisited place by place, day by day and twice too. Talking about old good days, five times in 15 years I've been able to go back home with more than 5 rings or pieces (gold only).I don't even count stainless, silver or fashion things... Still learning, still improvement to do, still trying to defeat sand levels...

  13. If you are going to dig on a nice lawn or yard I would suggest the following: First, after acquiring a target, see if it is shallow enough to be picked up by your pinpointer on the surface. If so, you might be able to use a probe or screwdriver to locate and flip out the coin target without taking a plug. If you are going to take a plug, the best way to prevent a brown grass situation is to cut a flap so that at least a part of the turf root structure is intact on the flap, fold it back, then remove the dirt as usual. placing it on your t-shirt or other cloth/towel for easy restoration after you have retrieved the target. Cutting a completely round plug on a lawn (especially a well manicured lawn) will result in a visible mark after a day or so, cutting a flap instead reduces the chance o that happening and will make your host happier. Practice that in your yard or at a public park where you don't have to seek permission. Then you can honestly tell them you have a method of recovering targets from the ground where you will leave no trace. As far as gaining permission - First dress for success>ask permission without being fully decked out in your dirty MD clothes, pouch kneepads, digger, etc. Wear casual but clean clothes and don't put the property owner on the spot (if it is a neighbor) that you want to dig now. Converse about the house, nice property, and then gradually bring up the metal detecting piece, how you find it interesting, and have found interesting history type stuff in your yard. Then ease into asking if they would mind if could search their yard for similar stuff. Ask if they would like to see what you found to see if it might have some meaning or value to them as property owners. Ask them if they have lost anything in their yard that you could find for them.. Don't emphasize jewelry or coins, just talk about interesting trinkets like buttons and lost toys. Ask if they want to see your finds and tell them that you will remove any trash or dangerous sharp items (can shards, nails) that you come across. Be friendly, respectful, and show more of an interest in them than their property and you will get more yes's than no's. If you have something from your kitchen or yard (cookies, apples, tomatoes) that you want to share you can bring those along as a conversation starter. The approach is a little different if you are seeking permission in a more remote area from your house. In that case you can talk about the area (do some history research) - For example, "Did you know an old house stood near your property?" Of "Did you know a civil war unit camped nearby?". And then say, I do research and on historical events and like to collect artifacts using a detector if I can gain access to a property. Again, stay away from talks of treasure - emphasize historical significance of what might otherwise be considered metallic junk (discarded buttons, thimbles, tools, knapsack parts) but that it interests you nonetheless because you understand its historic significance. Offer to show your finds, etc. Be prepared to offer something neat in return for gaining their permission, such as a cool button or coin your found. It is their property and they can dictate the terms of your access. Good luck.

  15. So I've been getting a lot of clad coins with both the Equinox and the Vanquish 440 in the local parks, but even in the older ones, silver coins have escaped me for a couple of months now. In between thunderstorms this afternoon, I hit the neighbor's parking strip, and in less than ten minutes, I pulled two silvers and a wheatie! My first silver quarter, AND my first Canadian silver. The quarter is pretty trashed, but I'm glad just the same! Felt good to break the slump!

  16. Best way to avoid bears is to carry pepper spray and wear bells on your shoes. The best way to tell if you are in bear country is to study the scat you come across. Bear scat smells like pepper and has little bells in it! The most danger here in Western Australia is exhaustion from carrying the wildlife on your back.

  19. Colonel Dan's Detector Rack Anyone who is into metal detecting knows what its like to pack your vehicle for a day in the field or at the beach. This is what my SUV looked like...and that was on a very organized day! Two detectors, a shovel, a sand scoop, equipment bag and cooler Not much room left for Miss Mary's suitcase or art equipment when she goes along. Not much usable space for anything else really except for a small area behind the passenger seat. I'm sure everyone has their own version of this load plan but you know the deal. There had to be a better way. I experimented with different ideas that worked to some level of success but none that fit the primary Cavalry Principle of KISS. I wanted a system that was portable, i.e. easily and quickly installed in and removed from my SUV. It had to be solid and stable with some heft so my detectors could ride safe and sound without tipping over or sliding around back there. Secure vertical stacking seemed to be the solution for me. The question was how to do it. I thought about several things I could build or re-purpose and finally settled on an unused truck gun rack. It was solidly built for my intended purpose, had rubber protection on the hooks to prevent damaging the detectors and had pre-drilled holes I could use for mounting it on a vertical frame. I decided to use 2x4s: easy to build with enough weight and heft to provide stability for my detectors. I built a frame that was 20” in height, 24” in width with feet 8” long which prevents tipping over or sliding around when fully loaded with equipment. Padding on the back helps protect the sidewalls of my SUV and a layer on the feet adds an additional level of prevention against slipping. My detectors finally have a safe place to ride—they're happy campers! And my load plan now looks like this. Much more available space for Miss Mary to use any way she likes! Life is good!

  22. A few years ago I started to do the following: Mix as mop bucket about 3/4 full of water Add the correct amount of Permethrin plus another 1/4 of the amount to the water. Then roll up a pair of pants and shirts and place into the water for a couple of hours. Remove and wring out into the bucket then add your hats to do the same. Allow the clothes to drip dry and your done. This procedure will remain on your clothes for about 2 weeks at at time, or through 2 wash cycles, that was all I tried when I was in the woods. Worked great keeping the ticks, chiggers, and other bugs off me. I would wear the same clothes for a couple of days to keep from retreating all the time, but the only person around me at the time was myself. You can always reuse the same water mix if you add a small amount of Permethrin to the added water when it gets a little low.

  23. I had Lyme's disease, so am bit more careful with ticks. Permethrin is the synthetic version of Pyrethrum made from chrysanthemum flowers and kills ticks on clothing and doesn't seem to cause problems when we get it on our skin. I haven't tried Picaridin, but understand it is also good with ticks. We just don't seem to have much luck with Deet, the ticks crawl right over it.

  25. Hello, So I am a beginner and amateur, but interested in finding gold as well as old coins, old bullets from muskets etc, relics, etc with a metal detector in Sweden. I have many thoughts about this, which I hope you can help me with, so I would be very grateful. I list my thoughts and questions below. 1. I was thinking about hearing what you think about the possibility of finding natural gold (gold grains, etc.) in Sweden in, for example, streams, etc., with a metal detector adapted to search for and find small gold grains? I found a website that has an article on it: http://www.detektorist.se/metalldetektor-guld/ If I understand them correctly, they mean: - The gold you find in Sweden unlike, for example, the USA and other countries (where you can often find the whole gold nuggets, unlike in Sweden where you find mostly small gold grains if you are lucky?) Is too small for a metal detector to find or almost impossible. It needs to be at least 3 milimeters for a metal detector to found it and may only be a few cm below the ground. - And that gold is not flattened in Sweden, which makes it even more difficult to find. - That gold is most often found in mineralized soil, which makes it difficult for the metal detector to get real signals, distinguish gold from other metal, etc. With that in mind, do you think it's worth it? Or waste of money? Or do you think it is wasteful and almost impossible to find gold in Sweden with a metal detector even if it is adapted for it? I am also interested as I said to find old coins etc. Should I put down the idea of finding naturally gold in Sweden, and buy a cheaper but good detector that is more focused on old coins, old bullets from muskets etc, than one that is most focus on finding natural gold? 2. Here I can buy in Sweden, "Professional metal detectors - metal seekers for prospectors looking for gold and minerals": https://www.guldstrom.se/sv/guld-mineralletning The metal detectors for seeking gold is: - Minelab Equinox 800 - Minelab Gold Monster 1000 - Minelab GPX 4500 - Minelab SCD 2300 Guld detektor - Garrett ATX - Minelab X-Terra 705 - XP ORX metalldetektor - Gold Rush tour 2020 Australia - Minelab GPZ 7000 Gold detector - Minelab GPX 5000 - Fisher Gold Bug 2 - Garrett AT Gold Would you recommend any of these? 3. I did send the swedish company an email and they answered: "Without a doubt, the best detector right now is the Minelab Gold Monster 1000 so this is the one to look for if you want to look for gold in Sweden. It also manages to find mineralized stones and it can differentiate between mineralized stones and solid metal. It is also excellent for exploring in streams and streams and the search coil is waterproof so it works great. The GM 1000 automatically adjusts itself so there are no knobs or buttons to turn on but just "whip and drive". You can find a really small gold grain -1mm in about 5 cm A larger gold grain of 3mm can be found in 10 cm A large gold grain of 4mm can be found in about 15 cm" If it is true on detektoristen.se that a gold grain must be 3 mm in Sweden, then the Minelab Gold Monster 1000 finds a gold grain of 1mm of 5 cm, 3 mm of 10 cm etc., so it does not seem to be a problem? In addition, it seems to be adapted to find gold in mineralized soil. So do you think it can work well to find gold in Sweden with a metal detector like Minelab Gold Monster 1000, or what do you think? Thank you very much.

  27. The Goldmonster 1000 is about as good as it gets for a simple to operate, single frequency, gold prospecting specific VLF metal detector. As a beginner, if you only wanted to detect for gold or if you already had a good coin and jewelry detector but wanted to add a gold prospecting detector for very small gold, it would be a great choice. That being said, I can only strongly echo what the other posters have said here. The Equinox is just as good on very small gold especially with the 6" coil as the Goldmonster 1000. I have owned both, found very small gold with both and still have the Equinox 800. The Goldmonster 1000 can detect any type of conductive metal target within its operating range. It will only tell you with varying accuracy if it is ferrous target or a non-ferrous target and it will do so with one audio tone and a ferrous/non-ferrous display bar. The Equinox will do the same thing on very small gold but it will give you so much more information about the target under the coil in the gold prospecting modes. Then you have 4 outstanding dry land and fresh water detecting modes with up to 50 different audio tones and numerical target IDs for identification along with an outstanding display with tons of other easy to read and understand information. Then you have two salt water detecting modes, waterproof, two different wireless audio capabilities........I could go on and on. If you want just a gold prospecting detector (which in your situation doesn't make much sense as it will take you many years to find enough tiny gold to pay for your detector) get the GoldMonster. If you intend to do many types of metal detecting ( you can pay for your Equinox with coin and jewelry finds eventually if you learn it well) get the Equinox 800 and you have just about every possible detecting scenario covered for the life of your detector. 28. You'd be amazed Simon. Nails? How about entire houses and hotels!? Where I hunted in Kauai, there have been direct hits by hurricanes. I am not exaggerating when I say entire buildings demolished, sucked into the surf, ground up, and spread about for decades. Concrete slabs, foundation blocks, rebar... well, all the heavy stuff mother nature could not wash away or corrode away. This is common in any area that has hurricanes - not to mention the ships sunk and ground up and washed ashore. There were places I hit with mask and snorkel where the bottom was just a mix of sand, basalt hot rocks, concrete chunks, and reddish lumps of every size and shape of ferrous junk. The only good part is most smaller ferrous corrodes completely away in time, but the big stuff turns from metal to lumps of rust and sand/coral that a PI detector just loves.

  29. There are very many threads on the Equinox here - a whole sub-forum in fact. The Equinox is probably the best selling metal detector in the world, so it is not like it is a risky proposition. I suggest you dig into the forum for further information. The Monster and Equinox both have advantages on certain types of gold versus the others, the type of things expert split hairs over all day long. Fr whatever it is worth I had both and sold the Gold Monster. Whatever it did better than an Equinox was so minimal if anything that it was not worth keeping it in addition to the Equinox. Personally I preferred the White's Goldmaster 24K over the Gold Monster, but with White's future in question will no longer be recommending it as an option. https://www.detectorprospector.com/forums/topic/4236-minelab-equinox-versus-gold-monster-1000-for-prospecting/ https://www.detectorprospector.com/forums/topic/5255-gold-monster-1000-vs-equinox-800/ https://www.detectorprospector.com/forums/topic/9992-video-minelab-equinox-800-vs-gold-monster-1000/ https://www.detectorprospector.com/forums/forum/53-minelab-equinox-forum/

  31. Plenty of nails everywhere in the USA The old shipwreck nails in my area are bronze I believe. Probably the 1700's and up. We can never totally get rid of nails, the best we can do is limit how many we pick up. Deep nails can be 15, 18, 24" etc deep. they sound very faint at that depth, just like a deep coin can.

  33. Thread split from here ................................................................ You mention the Garrett headphones -- specifically the ClearSound model mating well with the MDT in terms of good audio. Those are on-ear type and a lot of detectorists prefer over-ear. Have you tried their MS-2 model, which is only $10 more? I wonder if they use the same speakers or if Garrett just buys various 3rd party headphones and puts their logo on them, in which case probably not. I have some MS-2's and for the price ($30-$35 including shipping in USA) they are quite good, IMO. I still prefer Sunray Pro Golds (standard version and Minelab compatible version) because for one thing they fit tighter and thus block out ambient noise better. On the downside they cost about $100 more.

  35. When it comes to gold study the geology and mining history of the area. This gives you a realistic idea what you may find. Anything else is wishful thinking. You are fortunate these days in that you can have all you want in one detector. The Minelab Equinox 800 is in my opinion the most capable general purpose detector made to date, comparing to top tier VLF detectors at any task. This includes nugget detecting. In your shoes I would be getting it primarily to hunt for coins, jewelry, and relics, while being assured that you can use it to look for small gold if you wish. But in your location, you with the best metal detector, no matter what that is, and me with a gold pan, I know who I am betting on as having the best chance of finding gold. I say that as a person who has specialized in finding small gold with a metal detector for decades. I wish you the best of luck no matter what you decide. https://www.detectorprospector.com/forums/topic/7468-my-tips-on-nugget-detecting-with-the-minelab-equinox/

  36. Hello RickUK and thank you very much. As I understood it was banned before, but is now allowed to buy metal detectors because of EU rules, but you have to apply for permission from the state to use them, rather restrictive rules. You have to pay a large sum for every time you use it, you have to give reasons and only in a small restricted area, for a very limited time. Even if you use it on your small plot of land that you own, you have to have a permit or otherwise, you may be fined or, in the worst case, be sent prison for a few years. Crazy rules. Sure, I understand and agree that old Viking tombs etc, should be protected and that some restrictions are good (but that is just sweeping reasons in my opinion), but as usual the Swedish state is crazy. I have read that old coins, swords from the Viking era and the like, are being razed to be destroyed for all future because of the weather nature or so, but no private person can search and find them and save them for the future and donate to the museum, etc., but trained archaeologists must do that, but they do not because it costs money and The Swedish state does not care about our cultural heritage. Responsible for the cultural heritage is a non-Swedish person who does not care about the Swedish cultural heritage, a large number of objects from the Viking era, etc., the state has therefore destroyed and thrown away, because they do not want ordinary people to come over it. Unfortunately, Sweden is now a crazy country, I'm sorry to have to admit that.

  37. The Gholson family has been a big supporter of Minelab, especially back in the early days when Minelab was trying to get into the US market. We all do things a little different, but learned to play well when around each other. That piece you picked up most certainly has added some value since those days. Just think if we could have known back then what gold would be at today.

  40. If the machine starts overloading when you turn it on, first check your batteries are fully charged. Second make sure the Threshold is set well counter clockwise in the silent zone. So have Threshold silent when you turn it on and only after turning it on set the threshold level. The Tdi Sl can briefly overload when first turned on if the threshold is already set from previous use. Depends on the settings and coil being used. I find this 'bark' unpleasant so now make sure the threshold is well off before turning my machine on, then reset it after a few seconds. If this fails, try a different coil. At the end of the day you need to have confidence in your machine and that it is working correctly. Finally make sure you are outdoors when checking the machine and well away from hot EMI areas. All the best.

  42. The snakes, crocodiles, and drop-bears here in Australia are all protected and most people don't have guns, a licence is required for those that do have a legitimate reason for one. I think it is to dangerous for you guys in USA to come and get our gold (vanursepaul is the exception) DEET 70+ is good for stopping the march-flies from stinging you also stops them from carrying you back to their den. 😀

  43. Same trick I use since ten years ago. I found two times broken passenger's glass in a remote area where I hunted multiple times. Never leave visible stuff when You leave the car to go far from it.

  44. I thought about making something like that, but in my neck of the woods someone would walk by see it and break in to make a couple of bucks. I have started making a case that will hook to the clothes hooks on my vehicle so I can insert my detectors and close the back hatch. All I have to do is loosen the shaft, turn the handle 90 degrees and slide it in. That way when people look in they see an empty vehicle and my seats can stay in the upright position. When I get it done I will post it on here and give the plans for it.

  45. Thats an amazing total for a day. My very best back in the early 1980's was 9 gold in 1 day using Eric Fosters Aquasport. Thats when it was just so exciting cause there was no competition. It's a lot harder today. https://youtu.be/4ji0ghpsId0 Originally Allan Hassell started off with a Garrett deep Seeker sealed in plastic tube before going to the Aquasport Which only 3 come into oz as far as i know. Allan had one i bought the second one on a friday night took it home and it went bang and the electronics was stuffed. I took it back to Ian Aiken this is before ian went to Minelab and got the third one which was on the wall as a demo but i had no other options as the other one would have to go back to Eric Foster at Protovale U.K. I still have both copies of Bob Trevillian & Frank Carters books Diamonds In The Surf printed in 1982 & Diamonds In The Surf Second Adventure 1983. We did make reference to these as our bible. In every lifetime, there must be an adventure.........A quest to far off lands, an encounter with danger, the chance to explore the unknown,.......The search for treasure is one such adventure. One of there great finds in Chesapeake Bay was a diamond ring weighing 2,35 cts . It was appraised at &13,000 and was the only ring found that day by Bob in 1982.

  47. Yes Simon we do, because mosquito spray just won't work on bears it only makes them mad if you get it in their eyes. Bear spray and air horns for me to use on them and if that isn't enough then the guns.
