  1. Learning the Orx with 9" hf and scouting an older section of a park that many ignore. A lot of can slaw but overall good finds are sparse. Will hit it for deep targets later on but came across a couple of flat buttons not too old maybe turn of the century and this cool butterfly broach. Weighs 8g but has no markings. Base metal is not a pot metal so either platinum or maybe silver with spot gold plating on it. Thinking platinum base because of the detail in the casting. One of the wings got chewed up as it was under the turf and in with some gravel. Don't think it's an old piece just done well. Veins on wings are the base metal.

  2. Just so you all know, I ran out of Likes today so please don’t be offended. First and foremost. I cannot say in words...because I don't think there are enough and or I don't know the proper way to say it. But as a Marine and one who signed up knowing the ultimate sacrifice could be... and then hearing the news of a few USMC brothers who never came home, my heart goes out to those families and loved ones. Memorial Day is a proud day for many, yet heart-wrenching somber for others as each of us treat it differently. There's not... it's easy as black or white, right or wrong in my mind as some of us have never taken the knock on the door that tears our heart out. But yes, so many have had to go through that pain and agony. Memorial Day means so much to so many and in a variety of ways. All I can do is thank each of you who did post pics, stories and tributes to your loved ones and those who gave their all. I salute you. Now onto our freedoms of this fine forum, the ability for members to go out and make new memories with family/friends or be solitude how you desire. We had a pretty good turn out for this contest and there were a few 1st timers making comments, posting pics and having fun. It’s good to get new faces/names on DP and active with what we all enjoy (detecting and gold). Yes I realize we have some highly successful Swingers and I thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise for all of us to learn. Also, I see some young blood newer names who joined in the fun and I hope each of you continue to ask questions and share your experiences as you progress and get better. It’s the asking, sharing, bouncing off ideas/knowledge that eventually helps us all become better with our detectors. You must realize, even guys like Steve H and I who have been chasing nuggets with detectors for 25 yrs and a few members even longer (especially you Aussie mates), but the reality is….we were all greenhorns at one time and dumb as a rock. Eventually down the road, we’ll be old and not so nimble, so we’ll be looking for you newer gold chasers to help keep our fire and dreams/desire going. The tally – My count showed approx. 60 names went into the drawing for the Dream. The winner of the Dream GPX-6000? Everyone who entered, posted, commented and yes even you Northeast & Norvic. I thank you all. The winner of the new Minelab Gold Monster 1000 is…… Jeff McClendon. Jeff, please call Gerry’s Detectors so I may get this Monster sent out to you. Again, thanks everyone for posting pics, sharing memories, family stories & contributions to those who gave the ultimate. Hopefully down the road I’ll be able to meet some of you out in the gold fields and we can make some memories and dig a few nuggies. Then we can share pics, stories and knowledge for others to glean. Happy Hunting all. Thanks, Gerry Gerry's Detectors 208-345-8898 www.gerrysdetectors.com Gold Detector Field Training Genuine Metal Detecting Experts

  3. Had an invite to detect near Culpeper VA yesterday in the red dirt. The tarsacci found this awesome Eagle button. Have a couple hunts coming up near Culpeper in the next few months, I feel comfortable swinging the detector in the difficult soil. Will also be doing water hunts this summer.

  4. I spoke with Martha at Minelab this morning. The reason I called is, my machine is out of warranty and has been replaced three times since I bought it. I wanted to know how much it was going to cost to replace the pod and if the replacement was going to have a warranty. She told me it would cost $350 for a new replacement, or $225 for a refurbished unit. What she meant by refurbished, if someone returned a whole detector because of a faulty coil, shaft etc, they would send out that control pod if there are any available. I am still waiting to hear back from her on the amount of warranty that will come with the replacement pod. She wanted to double check on the amount of time before she gave me an answer. I have her permission to share this information on the internet forums.

  5. I got an email today from Rare Gold Nuggets and it said: A gold discovery in Russia of a gold nugget weighing in at over 22 pounds! Here's a link to the article with pictures: https://earth-chronicles.com/science/in-the-khabarovsk-territory-of-russia-found-a-gold-nugget-weighing-more-than-10-kilograms.html Quite impressive! There have been a lot of big nuggets mined in Russia over the years. A couple years back there was a 15-pounder found in Siberia. Here is a link with a picture of that one: http://raregoldnuggets.com/blog/?p=1085 Lots of big, remote, relatively unexplored lands over there... I bet there will be other big nuggets found in the future. PO BOX 6794 Boise Idaho 83707 USA

  6. Okay, I am sensing some frustration from some of you new ORX owners, from Chase and I can echo that feeling too. First, thin flat iron (whether rusted or not) and basically rusted through former tin plated steel are two utterly different things. Kac, if you want to hear an iron tone on heavily rusted, no longer tin plated late 1800s to mid 1900s steel cans on the ORX or the Deus, you will need to run up your iron discrimination in Coin Fast or Coin Deep to the mid tone/high tone break point which I think is around 75 to 80, if that is even possible to do on the ORX.....I honestly can't remember. A similar thing happens on the Equinox by the way, rusted out former tin plated steel cans and rusted steel crown bottle caps can read all over the place, especially towards the wrap around point near the top of the ID scale......30,31 and even 38,39,40 for the Nox and 80s to especially 98,99 and - - and 0 for the Deus and ORX. There is nothing unusual about this. These two detectors are very honest and accurate. Thin, heavily rusted "tin cans" are no longer mostly iron and they should not respond on any detector just in the iron range of target IDs in my opinion. The characteristics Chase and I are trying to describe for rusted tin plated steel and for rusted steel crown caps need to be carefully investigated and learned as they are tell tales for those targets. Yes, there will seem to be some nulling as part of their response, there may be no id just - -, there may be really jumpy high conductor IDs, they may not give a classic iron tone except on the outer edge of the coil, they may make the mineralization bar fill up (which is one of my favorite ways of telling a US quarter from a rusted steel crown bottle cap)......you may find some more characteristics. The ORX is the ORX. It is not going to detect like your Tejon, your AT Pro or your Multi Kruzer. What you are describing to me (even though you make it sound like a major fault) is just normal ORX behavior in my somewhat ORX experienced (1000 hours +) opinion.

  9. Threshold and discrimination iron amplitude rejection are parts of the Gold prospecting modes menus. They are not included in the menu in the Coin fast and Coin deep modes. The ORX manual is very lacking in details and has some glaring mistakes in my opinion. One of those is that near the end of the manual there is the default settings page for the four modes. Disc IAR is shown to only be a feature of the Gold modes. Threshold is shown to have a zero setting in all four modes which implies that it is a part of the menu in all four modes which is incorrect.

  10. Extended at the park one more day and I'm glad I did. Got a ton of practice looking at depth and analyzing targets before digging. Got really good at plugs. I only looked a bit around the farmhouse, got mostly trash and a couple of pennies. I did dig an old large cent, unfortunately no details. 😵 It's 1 1/8" wide, thick and heavy. Looks like someone tried to put a hole in it. Next I went to the canal and old dock: Coins everywhere. I also visited the volleyball court to do the other half. Didn't find anything stellar, 3 wheats, the oldest is 1924. Oldest quarter was 1967. 25 modern coins today! It was quantity, not quality. 😀 Feel like this was a beach trip, but overall it was a total blast and I met a lot of nice people.

  11. Conditions were pretty weak all this month, went out on several negative wet sand low tide hunts at a few spots. Started out the month with a small piece of 10k that looked like it was part of a gold nugget ring and also some grey crusted silver from an area that had a cut and some erosion.. Next peace of gold was the 10k nugget ear ring and a small silver peace ring found waaaay out in the negative low tide wet sand plateau, no doubt fresh drops, targets were few and far between at that beach. Next gold item was a tarnished 10k ring that looked like it had a pearl at one point since there is a post sticking out in the middle of the setting, also found some more dark crusty silver on that hunt from an area that had heavy black sand and steep wet sand slopes. The final hunt towards the end of May was a bit on the weak side, not many targets despite the high/low negative tides caused by the mega full moon. Pulled out a small 10k crucifix and was sure that was gonna be the last gold for the month, but as I was zig-zagging the wet sand on my way out I hit a screamer of a signal at the upper slope area, one scoop down, dump the sand and saw the outline of a ring, thought is was just silver at first sight but then I picked it up and noticed the weight, then noticed the hallmark.....Booyah! 18k/Plat Fred Goldman combo band! I was stoked! Called it quits and went home. Gold total for the month: 10k- 4.1 grams 18k/Plat - 11.5 grams Thanks for looking and GL out there!

  12. I want to do some more testing with my pile of junk comparing Deus to ORX gold mode audio response for ferrous targets (for other reasons) but might just have you send that piece to me to confirm my ORX (and Deus) responds similarly. If you can actually find a second target the responds similarly, then I might actually be concerned about masking, otherwise I think it’s a low probability event (like finding an actual cache of stacked silver) that I find to be very interesting from a detector nerd perspective but am not losing sleep over it from a real world detecting perspective. I am sure I miss way more targets due to poor swing coverage or because I don’t usually recover all ferrous than I do because of “silent”masking.

The only trouble they had to have a closed casket. The reason was the funeral home couldn’t get the smile off his face. The best to you out in the gold fields! Chuck

  17. Got permission for a construction site to dig bottles over Memorial Day weekend. The bottles were dating from 1860 to 1900 most of them 1880's. We dug over 60 bottles, I came home with at least 2 dozen decent ones. Had a great time with my Brother-in-law and a few friends. picked up a few wheat pennies in the waste piles and my Brother-in-law was lucky enough to find a valuable token. Sorry don't have a picture of it. Video below if you want to watch it. Sorry the audio kind of muffled in spots.

  20. Thanks! I'm afraid though that if the coin was worn before it was lost it isn't going to reveal much. They really "pinched" 'em back then. These coins were 10.89g initially, mine is 8.4 which indicates extreme wear along with corrosion. The only thing I can make out is the rim. There is a solution that brings out dates on Buffalo nickels but it damages the coin and only lasts a while. Haven't seen much for copper.

  21. Just tested in a clean spot in my yard with ground reading 79 on the Kruzer and 80 on the Orx. On the surface with coil 6" above the target the Orx only sounds off in gold modes which is expected but no ID at all only ground phase shift on the meter. All coin modes do not sens the target at all. With the Kruzer it shows and has an audible iron signal of 2. Burried the target about 5" down in the same spot and Orx responded exactly the same way and the Kruzer responded the same way. Only think I can think of is how XP determines what is ground mineralization vs an object and other manufacturers have a lower bar in that respect. Chase if you want me to mail it to ya just hollar and you can test for yourself.

  27. Oh..... you should try that. I would be curious if it actually did mask the good target if there was one. If it hears the good target, maybe that glitch is what we have been praying for, in not responding to iron but hearing something good under or near it. 😄 You never know.

  29. I have kept IAR off as I was affraid it might kill the signal on small thin silvers like trimes or deep coppers as I was not sure how it works and want to keep the machine as close to stock settings as possible. I did however use 15.6 khz instead of the 14khz so it plays nice with my Profind 35 pointer. I did dabble with increasing the discrim up to 14 to widen the gamut when responding to iron in items like washers and bottle caps but that has not proven consistent. I noticed that it's response to large flat targets like flattened cans can ring high and large iron can spike to the high 90s so I have been doing the usual lift of coil check and also a slow steady sweep to judge target size. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Quick test and pics in my yard with the can end of death. Note the ground itself has a low phase but with the can below the mineralization meter gets pegged but I still have no iron audio.... Programming bug? This is a coin deep mode at 15.6 khz

  30. my settings- 6.4 khz Mix mode, sensitivity was 7, and threshold set at 1 , black sand on ,salt on and balanced to 39. and ground balanced to 616 .and was using the 12" DD coil I hunted a park ,where the old swing set was . and the soil was glacial gravel & sand.and i got a nice solid 18-20 and had to dig way down to 1" past the depth of the pinponter and up comes a clad quarter. It was a solid 10" deep I was impressed. the other quarter was 7" . and i found several tabs down at the 10" level as well . but again small foil. Also out of the hole came several egg size basalt rocks that did not seem to block the signal to my 10" quarter . So I know this machine can find the silver if its down in the ground very pleased with the tarsacci

  31. Kac ... remember that in XP ORX the Coin Deep program has a fixed default Silencer / iron bias / to the lowest value ,,,, while the Coin Fast program has a fixed default silencer value somewhere around the value 3 ... so in practice when using the program Coin Fast you hear significantly fewer false signals from iron ... Yes, the Coin Deep program is deeper, but the Coin Fast program can prove to be a very effective program in separation practice. Use the frequency 14.4 khz first .... it gives the least false signals on the iron .. higher frequencies 31 khz and 54 khz I will falses on the iron a bit more .. Another thing is the limit of discrimination of iron / coke / color / ... it is somewhere at the level of VDI 25-26 ... but in the programs it is set to 7 by default ... which is relatively low ... so you have a sufficient reserve for increase of discrimination up to the level of 25 VDI or higher, because the small aluminum foil also gives 37-39VDI. Some iron in the ground can also give VDI 97-99- so in detection you can ignore such signals ,, -mainly after checking with a pinpoint detector..or checking the target with a coil from a different sweeping angle ... Gold and Fine gold programs are allmetle programs with another type of Discrimination * It is called IAR discrimination - which works differently from classic discrimination ... so you can use Gold programs with a high setting of 4-5 IAR to check for any suspicious coin size signal ... For very small targets, you already need to be more careful when using the high setting of 4-5 IAR because .. it can signal some targets to you as a small iron .. ...the most important thing is to reduce IAR discrimination when you are in more mineralized terrain ...

  32. Stacked quarter test my Multi Kruzer and AT Pro both dropped to iron range at 3 quarters. The Tejon held the tone to 3 quarters but gave a broken signal just above the iron mark (something I would dig) and the Orx gave a non iron tone to 9 quarters. The can disapears with or without IAR and I only seem to have IAR option under gold modes and haven't found it useful so it's been off. The can bottom responds the same across the gamut of frequencies and thinking because it is so thin it is just acting like a mask. Only reason I dug it was because in the ground it was on edge and gave a funky signal but oddly no iron signal. Seems like the HF has little or no fall off on the tip or tail of the coil. Not that it is a good or bad thing, just different and more precise so using tip off to help id iron isn't as reliable for me in this case.

  34. Thanks! I don't post if I don't find anything interesting, or don't have a thought or experience that might benefit someone. I've had a few skunk days, but for the most part research and a bit of good will can go far. As long as they don't let me grid this place it will never be hunted out, I never got in the water. It's full of "depositors" every year, and that old house has a lot of history and secrets. If you can get permission to hunt the remote parts of RV parks you will find a lot. We are a benefit to them, I picked up a lot of trash both metal and not. Showed them what we do, and they get it. I'm not saying hunt campsites unless you are willing to be careful and not leave a trace. Sports areas, boat launches, old home sites are all a part of these parks. Most have a beach of some sort, and even the state parks will sometimes let you hunt a man-made beach. Guess I'm on a one-man crusade to promote metal detecting at these places! 😀

  35. Thought I'd be wrapping up the RV park today, we decided to stay one more day. Been digging lots of stuff here, it's either been hit or there just isn't any silver. With all the techniques I've tried you'd think I'd find one silver coin. Still could be me... 🤔 But I have found silver (reales, US coins) so It's hard to believe it. The take today was just fun: 70s memorials, a 1916 wheat, an 1892 IHP. Box key lock plate, live .40 S&W hollowpoint, .380 FMJ. The snap is there to keep the bullets from rolling into my favorite find today: This 1920s brass advertising medallion for an obscure soda brand. Looks like it had a loop on top for keys or something. Info here: http://www.tazewell-orange.com/wascott.html Fun thing to find. Didn't see one in any collection so I may offer it up. Later I saw some people playing volleyball in a sand court. 😈 Hit that this evening, only got halfway through before the sun went down and my pinpointer died. Well there's one more day. There were some "gold" signals but I would be obligated to turn that stuff into the office I think. The gold would have sunk deeper than the modern coins IMHO, and it would be in the hard pan under the sand unless lost recently. I did get the '78 quarter there. Going to tell the maintenance guy to hit it when he gets his metal detector. 😀 He's hooked! It was a great day.

  36. The contest for the GPX-6000 is over as I did not get one in time. The Memorial Weekend Contest for a Gold Monster 1000 is over as well and any post after this is just for enjoyment purposes and dreams (kind of like the GPX-6000) from here out. Tomorrow, I'll try to get the tally and do a drawing so I can get the Winner posted. I have not even read through everything as I spent most of the day catching up with business from the long weekend. Looking forward to seeing the posts, reading the comments and seeing the pics of your enjoyable Memorial Weekend. Again, For those families who have given the ultimate sacrifice, I honor your husband/wife, son/daughter, brother/sister, niece/nephew, aunt/uncle, grandfather/grandmother and all the men/women who are no longer with us. Be proud of their actions for it's their bravery that allows our freedoms to be enjoyed on this day and forward.

  37. Running the Biggin today, reached down for some feint dimes and one nice 9" coin spill. Real nice coil, cleaning up what was left. That spill had 5 nickels 2 dimes and a quarter all stacked. Numbers were all over the place. But in disc mode easily made out the chimes with the nickel bongs. Doesn't always turn out that way. High, low or deep, the Biggin was snagging them today. The spill coins are near the tip of the shovel.

  40. Point I am making is the target that is iron and shows and sounds like iron on ALL my machines except the ORX. On the ORX is is showing as ground phase which tells me that there is probably an error in their programming where or the machine is not sensitive enough to pick up on the target as being an object. Bottom line in the real world if there was a descent target near or under that flat bit of iron it would be missed by the user because it is masking without any audio response. If I hunted in all metal the sound is offset from the target much like magnetite does. I would rather hear iron than totally miss the target through silence and just see a phase meter bounce up...

  45. In the strict sense, Memorial Day is for remembering and honoring those who died in military service of the USA. It goes back to right after the USA Civil War. But it is customary to also honor those who have served but haven't given their lives in that pursuit. We also have a holiday on 11 November (Veterans Day) for honoring all who have served in the military. That one unfortantely isn't quite as celebrated. The following photo picked off of the internet emphasizes the distinction: (Gerry, not an entry, just for informational purposes.)

Swinging the 11" on my 800 all metal with 21 sensitivity, and recovery at 7. The earring is 14k and had an id between 9-10. The ring was a total surprise id was showing 14 but sounded good and it was, 23k 3.0 gram and the earring is 1.5g. Happy Memorial Day ! 🤩 ht

  47. Thankfully as an Australian I am ineligible as the rules were too long and complamicated for this black duck. Also, thankfully, I am able to live my GPX 6000 ‘dream’ and not just be waiting for the container ships to unload. That’s hard for you guys in the States. Got out for about 1.5 hours this arvo before dark. About a dozen lead shot, some large rusty bolt heads and nails and a little bit of the right colour. I assume Memorial Day is very similar to our ANZAC Day and is a time for thanks and reflection of those that have served their country to keep us safe and free. In that context it’s not appropriate to say ‘Happy’ Memorial Day but I do hope you all have a good weekend, get to spend some time with your loved ones and enjoy the solitude or comradery that prospecting brings you 🤗 Cheers, NE.

  50. Many Thanks Gerry, 73 had its origins in Morse Code in early telegraphy from US and British Railways, is simply code for Best Regards, but this code (Phillips Code) was the seed to secret code for Morse use during the WW1 by both sides. Bit of a surprise to me that it was used as a RAAF Wing name in WW2, well ferreted, I thought after WW1 it became part of the Worlds radio communication history except for its continued adoption by HAMs. 73 "Lest we Forget"
